Destiny 2: How to Get the Jötunn Catalyst (& Why You Need It)

The new season of Destiny 2, Season of the Haunted, added many new features, such as the much anticipated Solar 3.0. One thing that may fly under many players' radar is the catalyst for the exotic fusion rifle Jötunn. The question becomes where one can pick up this new catalyst, what it can do, and (most importantly) how well it works with the new Solar 3.0 and the guardian's new abilities.

Jötunn initially released during the fifth season of Destiny 2, Season of the Forge which released alongside the Black Armory expansion in Dec. 2018. As of the Beyond Light expansion, Jötunn is accessible through the Monument to Lost Lights in the tower for the cost of an Exotic Cipher. Jötunn is a Solar fusion rifle that charges up a single projectile, similar to a tracking rocket launcher as it has actual travel time and is not hit scan.

Acquiring the catalyst for Jötunn is simple, though it requires a bit of luck. First off, players must have Jötunn to get the catalyst. Assuming one has the weapon, the catalyst has a chance to drop after completing any playlist activity, be it Strike, Crucible, or Gambit. While this makes it simple to acquire in theory, it may take a while for some to get the catalyst to drop depending on their luck and how many other catalysts one needs from that source. Once one acquires the catalyst, players must get 500 kills with the weapon to fully unlock its perks.

The Jötunn catalyst gives the weapon two perks, Cornered and Incandescent, the latter of which is new in Season 17, Incandescent. Cornered gives Jötunn a faster charge time while surrounded by enemies, which is useful given Jötunn's relatively long charge time. Meanwhile, Incandescent makes it so that, upon getting a kill with the weapon, it spreads the scorch condition to nearby enemies. Scorch is the new term for the burn effect that causes targets to take damage over time and eventually ignite if enough scorch stacks are put on the target. This breathes new life into the exotic and gives players a new reason to try it out.

By allowing the weapon to spread scorch, Jötunn is able to combo with the new Solar aspects and fragments to allow for new ways to create a build. For Titan, it allows them to mix Jötunn with the aspect Sol Invictus which allows the Titan to spawn sun spots upon defeating targets with solar abilities or defeating scorched targets. For Hunters, it can proc the Gunpowder Gamble aspect which charges a souped-up grenade by defeating targets with abilities, Solar debuffs and Solar weapons, of which Jötunn can provide two of. It also helps proc fragments, such as Ember of Searing, which grants melee energy upon defeating scorched targets and Ember of Singeing which grants class ability energy upon scorching a target. It can even simply help increase the scorch stacks put onto a target to bring them to 100 stacks so that the target ignites in a fiery explosion.
