Critical Role’s The Legend of Vox Machina Reveals Opening Sequence, Premiere Date

The highly anticipated animated adaptation of Critical Role's first role-playing campaign, The Legend of Vox Machina, finally has a final premiere date.

The show's Feb. 4 premiere date was revealed during the show's panel at this year's New York Comic-Con, along with a first look at the opening sequence for the animated series. The opening sequence features all of members of the Vox Machina adventuring party performing their critical roles (pun intended) in combat against a variety of foes. The title sequence also previews some of the varied lands that the booze-loving misfits will travel to throughout the series. In addition to the new title sequence, the cast of Critical Role also performed a live table read of a scene from the series.

The Legend of Vox Machina is an adaptation a campaign played by Critical Role, a popular web series that drops veteran animation and video game voice actors into a table-top RPG campaign with each other. The series' Vox Machina campaign featured Demon Slayer and Resident Evil's Matthew Mercer as the dungeon master, with Laura Bailey (Dragon Ball Z, Spider-Man), Taliesin Jaffe (Mobile Suit Gundam: Unicorn, One Piece), Ashley Johnson (Blindspot, The Last of Us Part II), Liam O’Brien (Revolutionary Girl Utena, Sailor Moon Crystal), Marisha Ray (Persona 4: Arena, Fire Emblem), Sam Riegel (Sanjay and Craig, Winx Club) and Travis Willingham (Fullmetal Alchemist, Sonic the Hedgehog) playing the roles of the Vox Machina adventuring party. The players from the original campaign are all reprising the roles of their RPG characters, and they will also serve as the executive producers for the new animated series.

The Legend of Vox Machina was originally announced as a single, 22 minute animated short. In 2019, Critical Role launched a Kickstarter campaign to crowdfund the special, with an initial goal of $750,000 USD. Their goal was surprassed within the first hour of the campaign going live, and by the end of the fundraising drive a month and a half later, a total of $11 million USD was raised for the project. Later that year, it was announced that Amazon Studios had signed on to the project and that the single animated special was now being expanded into a full animated series that will be released exclusively to Amazon's Prime Video streaming service.
