Critical Role’s The Legend of Vox Machina Drops Bloody, Profanity Filled Trailer

The latest trailer for The Legend of Vox Machina offers an uncensored look at the adventuring guild's adventures.

The new trailer, which was released by Amazon's Prime Video service, immediately makes it clear that the new animated series isn't your typical high fantasy adventure. The preview introduces the Vox Machina guild's band of hard drinking, foul-mouthed and self-interested adventurers and several of the foes that they may accidentally vanquish during The Legend of Vox Machina's first season. The show is scheduled to premiere exclusively on Prime Video on Jan. 28, one week ahead of its originally announced premiere date.

The Legend of Vox Machina is the highly anticipated animated adaptation of the first role playing campaign played through by Critical Role, a popular web series that stars several of the animation and video game industry's biggest voice actors as they play through various tabletop games. The original campaign starred Resident Evil and Attack on Titan voice actor Matthew Mercer as the dungeon master, alongside players Laura Bailey (Dragon Ball Z, Spider-Man), Taliesin Jaffe (Mobile Suit Gundam: Unicorn, One Piece), Ashley Johnson (Blindspot, The Last of Us Part II), Liam O’Brien (Revolutionary Girl Utena, Sailor Moon Crystal), Marisha Ray (Persona 4: Arena, Fire Emblem), Sam Riegel (Sanjay and Craig, Winx Club) and Travis Willingham (Fullmetal Alchemist, Sonic the Hedgehog). The players from the original campaign are all reprising their characters for the animated series, and are also serving as the show's executive producers. The series features character designs created by Phil Bourassa, an artist who previously contributed his talents to numerous DC animated projects, such as Young Justice, Batman: Bad Blood and Justice League.

The animated adaptation originally began with a Kickstarter that was intended to fund a single, 22-minute short based on the web series' role-playing adventures. However, the fundraising campaign immediately blew past its original goal of $750,000 USD and ultimately pulled in $11 million USD total. The series' scope was later expanded into a full length animated series when Amazon Studios signed on to help produce and distribute the show.

In addition to the new series, Critical Role fans can look forward to digging into a new campaign book based on Vox Machina's world, entitled Tal Dorei Campaign Setting Reborn, which is due out on Jan. 18. The Critical Role team is also partnering with Wizards of the Coast for an official Dungeons and Dragons book, Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep, which is due out next March.
