Castlevania: Carmilla’s Plan for Humanity Is the Plot From Daybreakers

Upon her entry in Castlevania Season 2, it is clear Carmilla is not down for Dracula's plan to eradicate all of humanity, primarily concerned about what vampires would do about food if all humans were killed off. She even turns Hector, one of Dracula's human generals, against him because the Forgemaster initially believes Dracula is going to reduce humanity's numbers and control the population, which is not the case. Instead of complying with Dracula's orders, Carmilla and Hector betray him, with Carmilla going into more detail about her plan in Season 3, and it's feels pulled from the film Daybreakers.

In Season 3, Episode 2, "The Reparation of My Heart," Carmilla confides to her sisters what her plan is. She wants to take control of the areas destabilized after Dracula's actions. This is 800 miles worth of territory, with the vampires inhabiting the area lacking structure while the humans are struggling just to survive. With this land in such disarray, Carmilla plans to turn it into a pen for human livestock by controlling the borders with Hector's night creatures.

Carmilla knows vampires are dependent on human blood for food, so if they were to follow Dracula's plan, it would've devastated vampires in the long run. Instead, Carmilla wants to give vampires an everlasting food source. By putting people in a pen, then she can control the population, leaving enough humans to reproduce so the blood supply is neverending.

Her plan is clever initially; however, it's not original, with Daybreakers taking place in a dystopian world where vampires are now the dominant species, and humans are hunted and farmed for their blood, similar to what Carmilla plans to do. There are some major differences between Carmilla's ideal world and the reality of Daybreakers. For instance, Daybreakers takes place in the future, and humans are kept in laboratory farms, where they're stuck in suspended animation. This differs from Carmilla's pen, which would likely allow a select number of humans to have a limited amount of agency so they could reproduce.

Daybreakers also shows the flaws of Carmilla's plan. In Daybreakers, as humanity's numbers dwindle and the vampire population rises, farming humans proves to be an unreliable food source, with vampires experimenting on people to try to develop a blood substitute. While Carmilla somewhat comes up with a solution for this, allowing humans enough freedom to reproduce in her pen, it's still a risky move nonetheless. Farming humans in Daybreakers initially seemed like a solid plan, but years later, that proved to be false. It's likely Carmilla will be able to avoid this issue for some time as long as humans continue to reproduce for her and as long as the vampire population doesn't exponentially grow; however, these variables are going to be harder to control as time goes on.

The world of Daybreakers and of Castlevania are vastly different, with the former being a dystopian sci-fi and the latter being a gothic epic. Daybreakers also shows a world already dominated by vampires and how that has backfired against humanity and the creatures of the night, while Castlevania explores the vampires as they try to gain control over humanity. Despite these glaring differences, the world Carmilla hopes to create for her and her sisters are similar to the reality of Daybreakers; although she has at least thought through how to make her pen more sustainable than the laboratory farms, it's up for debate if it truly will be an endless food supply for vampires in the long run.

Castlevania stars Richard Armitage as Trevor Belmont, Alejandra Reynoso as Sypha Belnades, James Callis as Alucard, Theo James as Hector, Adetokumboh M'Cormack as Isaac, Jaime Murray as Carmilla, Jessica Brown Findlay as Lenore, Bill Nighy as St. Germain, Jason Isaacs as The Judge and Rila Fukushima as Sumi.
