Boruto: Team 7’s New Mission Could Be the Upgrade Konoha’s Teens Need

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Chapter 68, “Scar,” by Masashi Kishimoto, Mikio Ikemoto, Mari Morimoto and Snir Aharon, now available in English from Viz Media.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the Boruto series is how Team 7 has become more fluid. Naruto had it as a fixed unit with Kakashi mentoring Naruto, Sakura and Sasuke, but now the likes of Kawaki, Shikadai and Chōchō have filled in when Boruto, Sarada or Mitsuki aren't available. It's allowed Konohamaru to evolve as well, with various students under his wing.

However, with Naruto's son back in Konoha, it does feel like the manga will be sticking to the original kids. It'll add continuity and give them more time together to surpass what the Hokage's crew did back in the day. But what's interesting is that, in Chapter 68 of Boruto, Team 7's new mission could be exactly what they needed to level up.

Boruto recently got damaged by Kawaki, who accessed his new Karma and more of Isshiki's power. He was only trying to protect the Hidden Leaf though, mortally wounding Boruto so Momoshiki wouldn't return using the kid as a vessel. Thankfully Momoshiki revived Boruto, leaving his soul in the boy's body. It meant Momoshiki couldn't be reborn, but he could still possess Boruto.

Sarada and Mitsuki are worried as a result, knowing they'll have to tail Boruto anywhere he goes. They don't want him becoming a risk in the village, which Sasuke admits is a possibility when he intervenes in the meeting. He needs Team 7 to keep a close eye on their teammate, knowing Momoshiki could emerge and wreak havoc at any time.

As such, Sarada, who leveled up with her Sharingan, and Mitsuki will have to get better, pushing themselves to take Boruto on if Momoshiki appears. It's something the other young shinobi will have to do as well, which will only improve their game. In short, they'll be better guardians as they look after their friend. In addition, if Boruto can control the alien inside and harness his power, Mitsuki and the others will have to improve just to keep pace. After all, they can't just let Boruto become a ninja god like Naruto did with Kurama, while they get left behind.

They'll want to be on equal pegging or higher than Boruto, which can test Sarada's Uchiha abilities even more, as well as Mitsuki's snake powers he inherited from Orochimaru. To top it off, all these kids will have to keep an eye not just on Boruto, but Kawaki. If both come into contact, Kawaki may try to kill Boruto again. Admittedly the kids don't know what really transpired, thinking Code was the one who damaged Boruto rather than knowing Kawaki inflicted the deadly wounds.

However, Momoshiki could always leak the secret when they tail Boruto. As such, they'll need to be ready for Kawaki if they suspect he and Boruto are in conflict. This ultimately crafts a much more emotional journey for them all, leaving fans wondering if the kids can deal with the lie and physically keep up with the two shinobi who will either save or break the Hidden Leaf.
