Boruto Resurrected Naruto’s [SPOILER] – at a Costly Price

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Chapter 67 of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, “Rift,” by Masashi Kishimoto, Mikio Ikemoto, Mari Morimoto and Snir Aharon, now available in English from Viz Media.

The Boruto manga has been an uphill battle between Naruto's son and Momoshiki, whose possession and rewriting of the kid's DNA seems unstoppable. Amado's suppression medicines aren't working as well, which resulted in Kawaki blowing a hole in Boruto's chest to ensure the alien didn't return in the forest.

Luckily, Boruto Chapter 67 revealed the teen was safe and sound; however, it doesn't bode well for the future at all. That's because Momoshiki appeared to Boruto, revealing he was the teen's savior and that while one dark fate has been avoided, it has come at a very steep price -- and another is inevitable.

Momoshiki saved Boruto's life

With Naruto and Shikamaru mourning their loss and wondering where they went wrong, Boruto suddenly revived after the hole started to repair itself. He didn't even know he got damaged that badly, but it was clarified when Momoshiki's apparition appeared, as is the usual between the two. In their shared mindscape, he confessed he needed Boruto alive because the kid contained the last living essence of him. The DNA from Momoshiki's Karma was 82% complete at the time of 'death,' so the villain decided to force the remaining 18% out. This was taken from his rebirth process, which means that while Boruto lived, the alien could no longer take over his body.

In short, the resurrection was broken because if Boruto died, Momoshiki would too. As such, the latter opted to remain as a ghost, but there's a catch -- Boruto's body is now fully that of an Ōtsutsuki. He may have staved off Momoshiki but part of him will always exist within, and more so, Boruto still has the sinister prophecy to deal with. Momoshiki had told Boruto that his "blue eyes" would take everything from him. Now, the alien has admitted this is the first step to that fate. He couldn't see exactly what would happen down the line, but it reaffirms that Boruto being an Ōtsutsuki is going to lead to tragedy.

Usually, someone who has full Ōtsutsuki DNA needs an alien piloting the body, as seen in the past with Jigen the monk being possessed by Isshiki, so he warns that Boruto as an outlier won't bode well. It also means Boruto is ready to be sacrificed to the Ten Tails, so Code will be eager to capture him ASAP.

Momoshiki saved Boruto's life

That said, it won't be easy for Code because this new change may take Boruto's humanity away, which is why Kawaki killed the kid after garnering all Isshiki's power for himself. It seems like a coldness takes over humans in these situations, although they do have to be wary because people like him and Kawaki are still mortal -- and won't necessarily be resurrected from the next time they die.

It's left fans wondering if Boruto's eyes -- due to his mother Hinata being from the Hyūga clan -- will try to boost his body now but inadvertently facilitate this downfall. They could evolve and corrupt him like Toneri Ōtsutsuki was on the moon with his Byakugan and the Tenseigan, both ocular jutsus that drove him mad with power. Ultimately, Naruto's science team will have even more tests to run because when Momoshiki disappeared, seemingly to contemplate his own future, he made it clear that tragedy is coming -- and Boruto won't be able to fight it.
