Boruto: Naruto Resolves His Most Heartbreaking Task In the Perfect Way

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 220, "Remaining Time," now streaming on Crunchyroll.

With Momoshiki's presence still inside Boruto's body, the Boruto anime has Naruto and the Kages from the other villages desperately seeking a solution. They know the destruction the alien and his aide, Kinshiki, enacted last time so they don't want a repeat of this war. They're fully aware what an Ōtsutsuki can do if unhinged, so they give Naruto his most heartbreaking task yet. Thankfully, the Hokage of Konoha resolves it in the most perfect way possible, sticking true to the character's "ninja way."

All the leaders admit Naruto needs to be prepared to do the unthinkable -- kill his son. They can't afford another Ōtsutsuki rampage, and while they ducked that when Isshiki blindsided the Hidden Leaf, they now want preventative measures in place.

Naruto reassures Boruto he won't kill him to stop Momoshiki's return

Naruto sadly confesses he'll do whatever it takes, with the council admitting that after Kurama's death, he's weaker now and might need to end the teen before Momoshiki takes over. It's a crushing but necessary sacrifice, which even Sasuke admits may be the right move later on as they confer.

The Uchiha Ranger said he'd kill his student in the past but while he held back on this notion, losing his Rinnegan to Momoshiki and seeing how the corrupted Boruto will be has him reversing his stance. Seeing Sasuke all about risk mitigation truly leaves Naruto broken.

Naruto then holds a meeting with his son by the same river Kakashi has always advised him by, discussing how the alien's DNA is rapidly spreading. They don't know when the genetic rewriting will be completed, so Naruto wants to tell him the truth. Ironically, Boruto cuts him short and indicates he's ready for what needs to be done, sensing an ultimatum was served. But Naruto shows us why he is who he is, evoking the hopeful young shinobi of old. He promises he'll do whatever it takes to find an answer, and that isn't murder.

Naruto faced the same odds when folks wrote Sasuke off, or when Kaguya played Madara and Obito, but he persevered. He kept faith and now, he proves to Boruto he believes his son can stave off the infection. Boruto hugs his dad, glad there's trust and love between them again, erasing the turmoil of old.

It's a rare, vulnerable moment that Boruto needed, as he was jealous at his dad giving Kawaki so much tender care and attention. Ironically, as the teen finally sleeps in the Hokage coat while Naruto watches over to ensure no possession occurs, his prayers are answered. Amado delivers some pills to slow the infection, but Naruto knows it's temporary and they still need a proper cure. At the very least, Boruto's father-son bond is back once more, healing a major aspect of their dysfunctional relationship.
