Boruto: Konoha’s Bravest War Hero Doesn’t Need To Embrace Its Scientific Progress

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the Boruto anime, currently streaming on Crunchyroll.

In the Boruto series, Konoha's science division has been one of the story's most important elements, illustrating how far the village has come since the days of Naruto. Bit by bit, Sasuke helped Boruto understand what these tools can do for shinobi in the field, and seeing Katasuke's devices in action against Kara aided Boruto in letting go of his insecurities.

He's seen how science is helping other nations unite, strengthening the alliance. Citizens all across the free ninja world are also grateful, which has left some fans wondering if Konoha's greatest war hero, the veteran known as Might Guy, should work with Katasuke's team, too.

Guy fought at Kakashi's side for years but prior to this, he was Kakashi's rival in their childhood while working alongside his dad, Duy. Neither father nor son could harness ninjutsu, which meant hand-to-hand combat or taijutsu was their main weapon. Guy eventually passed these skills down to Rock Lee (someone who couldn't use ninjutsu either) years after Duy died, and left Guy to become a master on his own.

Make no mistake, he fared pretty well, earning the admiration of many peers and Hokages, but tragedy would strike when Guy had to fight Madara. He unleashed all Eight Gates, becoming an inhuman super-soldier with massive strength and chakra, but the Uchiha villain was in god mode. Simply unbeatable, the vindictive Madara crushed Guy to the point that he now uses a wheelchair. Guy never recovered from this and when Kakashi retired from leading Konoha, he began assisting Guy as he really did consider him to be his best friend.

But there's no reason for Guy to stay in a wheelchair if he doesn't want to. After all, Katasuke has helped Ao with his injuries after his body was crushed from the Ten-Tails dropping a chakra bomb on the sensory team. He's also created a prosthetic arm for Naruto, indicating he can remedy permanent injuries, which means he should be able to treat Guy and help him walk again. Why hasn't Guy opted for this, then? There are a few reasons to consider.

We know Guy is driven by "the power of youth" mentality wherein one relies on their natural abilities, but also, he's a fan of destiny, and if this were meant to be his fate, he wouldn't want science interjecting. Plus, he's honestly quite happy as he is, which is why he and Kakashi are enjoying the best years of their friendship.

It's also worth noting that even if both Guy and the Science team wanted to work on his body, Guy doesn't really need them to continue being an inspirational beacon. While he might not have the use of his legs, Guy can still be a mentor and teach students the doctrines of taijutsu, as well as work with Rock Lee, who can take up the physical aspect of the tutelage if needed. He's done it in small doses but it's a role he can appear in more often.

This might also make him even more of a role model for kids, especially those with disabilities, and not just in Konoha, but in other nations, as well. Katasuke's building incredible tools but just because Guy's in a wheelchair it doesn't necessarily mean he needs healing, physically or mentally. Someone of his stature -- a battle-hardened legend -- is already perfectly equipped to properly enjoy retirement or return to the classroom. He's always had (and remains having) a strong mind and body, and an even more indomitable will. No villain could ever take that away.
