WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Chapter #59 of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, “Knight,” by Masashi Kishimoto, Mikio Ikemoto, Mari Morimoto and Snir Aharon, now available in English from Viz Media.
The Boruto manga has been an emotional roller coaster for Kawaki as he attempts to help Naruto and Konoha finish off the remnants of the terrorist cell, Kara. With Isshiki Ōtsutsuki finally dead, Kawaki can breathe a little easier, because he's no longer the alien's vessel. However, he knows with Code coming for revenge, they have their work cut out for them.
Ironically, another major concern is the Hokage's son, as he doesn't want Boruto to become possessed by Momoshiki. Therefore, he's working with him to place a Karma on Code in order to be reborn. But as Kawaki juggles all of that, the teen is offered his most powerful upgrade ever in Chapter #59. Sadly, it may come at a steep price.
Amado is working on getting Kawaki healthy again after the Isshiki fight, because he was the Kara scientist who augmented the boy's body to be a host. Amado knows Code is on the hunt, however, so he asks Kawaki if he'd like to level up again with his Karma mark.
Kawaki is stunned because he thinks with Isshiki gone, the mark is too. But Amado confesses his body is mostly that of an Ōtsutsuki because the alien DNA nearly completed its rewrite. It was about 80 percent finished when the villain died, but although his soul is gone, the Ōtsutsuki house remains that is Kawaki's body. The problem is, Kawaki cannot tap into it without a Karma mark -- that is, the "door." Amado offers to rebuild this mark, which will enable him to harness the full power without having to worry about becoming possessed.
The scientist admits it will make him more powerful than Code. After all, Code didn't pass the test to become a perfect vessel, so, with Isshiki giving him a Karma before he died, Code is only tapping into a lesser portion of the alien's power. Given that Kawaki was the ideal host, he simply has much more power available.
It's Kawaki who storms off, but he is distracted by the notion of the upgrade. After all, Naruto lost Kurama, and Sasuke lost his Rinnegan, so the Hidden Leaf is vulnerable. In addition to having to stop Code, he might also have to kill Boruto if Momoshiki takes over. Not only does he consider Naruto a father, but he's also starting to care for Konoha because it's the only home and family he's ever known.
However, Sumire hears the plan and calls out Amado. Although Amado betrayed Isshiki, she thinks he has another scheme in the works. It could be that he has someone else to possess Kawaki, or that he could be up for transferring his essence into the kid. Either way, this experimental procedure might be what turns Kawaki evil, as seen at the start of the series, as no one knows what will be the aftereffects should he accept.
