Bleach: Ichigo Would Make a TERRIBLE Naruto Shinobi – Here’s Why

Bleach's Ichigo Kurosaki is certainly powerful, but he's the "muscle over matter" type of hero who uses brute force to win his battles. Ichigo is far from stupid; in fact, he's an ace student with a methodical personality who doesn't often rush into a situation unprepared. Still, he would suffer if he ever wound up in the Naruto world.

Different action series feature different combat systems, and in some franchises, sheer strength is what matters most — just ask Son Goku. But in other series, having a tricky, unpredictable mind and sharp insights make all the difference, something that the ninja of Naruto's world can attest to. Ichigo just doesn't measure up.

Ichigo Kurosaki's Heroic Style Is About Survival

Ichigo Kurosaki From Bleach

To understand how would Ichigo fare in Naruto's world, it's important to review how Ichigo handles himself as a shonen hero, and what he's accomplished so far. Ichigo's personality isn't quite as peppy as Naruto's or Goku's. Instead, he has a stern, punkish persona that might put people off at first. Ichigo Kurosaki is a no-nonsense hero, but when his friends or family are threatened, Ichigo shows his true colors. Ichigo is quick to leap into battle and risk his life to keep his loved ones safe, and he has stared down the likes of Captain Byakuya Kuchiki, Ulquiorra Schiffer and more when someone's life is in peril.

What's more, Ichigo often believes that he must act alone, and that all the world's burdens fall on him. His name can even be translated as "one defender," and he never asks anyone to help him. He won't ask a friend to do something that he wouldn't do himself, and indeed, he initially planned to storm the world of Hueco Mundo all by himself to rescue Orihime Inoue. His friends Uryu and Chad had to invite themselves to the party.

During a mission or in a fight, Ichigo's style is "hit the villain until they're defeated." He's not the type to set traps or use tricky spells and abilities. In fact, his Zanpakuto, Tensa Zangetsu, doesn't even have any special abilities aside from the brute-force Getsuga Tensho, and he can't perform kido spells, either. Ichigo doesn't use any additional weapons, devices or summons to back him up, either. When an opponent pulls tricks, Ichigo can only power through it and hope that he can slay his enemy before he succumbs. By contrast, Ichigo's friend Uryu Ishida can see right through the opponent's strategy to deduce their weak points, and use the right tools for the job. He nearly defeated the Espada scientist Szayelaporro Grantz this way, once he had Renji backing him up.

Ichigo Would Struggle in Naruto's World

Naruto vs Six Paths of Pain

Meanwhile, while there are characters in Naruto who emphasize strength over everything, like Might Guy and sometimes even Naruto himself, this isn't generally the rule. Typically, a shinobi is expected to outsmart the enemy, outmaneuvering them and using every tool at their disposal to win. A ninja, as the chunin exams showed, must look beyond and get to the heart of every mission and combat situation.

A ninja can easily be defeated with a single cunning genjutsu or kekkei genkai ability, or turn the tables on their enemy with a surprise attack — regardless of combat strength. Of course, while Shikamaru Nara is the brainiest ninja of all, not every shinobi needs a genius mind to get ahead. Many times, characters like Kakashi, Jiraiya and Kabuto craftily manipulated their opponents with cunning schemes or foiled the enemy's own plans just by being clever.

This isn't how Ichigo Kurosaki fights, and it's not how he was trained, either. Ichigo relies on sheer willpower to win, and he turned around more than one losing battle by reminding himself of what's at stake. For example, he almost lost a battle to Grimmjow, until Orihime tearfully begged him to not die. Then, with the same straightforwardness as always, Ichigo won by the skin of his teeth. This makes for thrilling action, but it's terribly incompatible with how things are done in Naruto Uzumaki's world.

If Ichigo went there, then any manner of genjutsu would work wonders on him, and even ninja who are slower and weaker than Ichigo could run in circles around him and disorient him in any number of ways. Any of Ichigo's missions would end in failure, especially since he struggles to come up with gameplans besides "storm the enemy den and slaughter them." Either in a single fight or an overall mission, Ichigo would get outfoxed every time, and he's best off slaying Hollows in his own universe.
