The official website for the Bakuten!!/Backflip!! original television anime announced on Friday the series is getting an anime film.
Following the release of Episode 12 on Crunchyroll, the team behind the hit anime gymnastics series confirmed on Twitter that Toshimasa Kuroyanagi is directing a feature-length anime film and production is already underway.
A new teaser trailer and an official website for the film were also posted online. The 30-second clip featured new footage of the gymnastics team performing their mat routine, while the website teases that more details about the film will be released soon.
Backflip!! premiered on Fuji TV's Noitamina programming block in Japan on April 8, with Crunchyroll airing new episodes simultaneously in the United States. The anime is set in Iwanuma city and follows Shōtarō Futaba, who is fascinated by gymnastics after seeing it in his third year of middle school. After joining the rhythmic gymnastics team at his new high school Sōshūkan High School, the young gymnast makes friends with his schoolmate and team standout Ryōya Misato.
Toshimasa Kuroyanagi (The Great Passage, Omoi, Omoware, Furi, Furare) directed Backflip!! at ZEXCS, while Toshizo Nemoto (Log Horizon, Macross Delta, Last Hope) led the series composition and scripts. Meanwhile, My Little Monster manga creator Robico drew the original character designs and Yūki Shibata (Kimi ni Todoke, Magical Sisters Yoyo & Nene, After the Rain) drew the character designs for animation, as well as served as chief animation director.
The Backflip!! series was also recently adapted into a manga series drawn by Kei Sakuraba, which premiered in Kodansha's Dessert magazine on Jan. 22.
