Attack on Titan Creator Shares Heroic Legend of Arslan Fan Art for Manga’s 100th Chapter

Attack on Titan creator Hajime Isayama celebrated the release of The Heroic Legend of Arslan's 100th chapter by drawing two of the characters from the series.

Isayama's drawing was posted online by anime news site Comic Natalie. The Heroic Legend of Arslan is the manga adaptation of Yoshiki Tanaka's acclaimed fantasy novel series, Arslan Senki. The manga is drawn by Fullmetal Alchemist creator Hiromu Arakawa and published its 100th chapter on Dec. 9 in Kodansha's Bessatsu Shonen magazine. Isayama's drawing, which he signed with a quick chibi drawing of Mikasa, was also published alongside more Arslan fan art from Flying Witch creator Chihiro Ishizuka.

The Arslan franchise began with 1986 with the publication of the first novel in the series, which featured illustrations from Final Fantasy and Sandman artist Yoshitaka Amano. The series is a loose adaptation of the Persian epic Amir Arsalan, and tells the story of Arslan, a prince who is attempts to liberate his nation after his kingdom is invaded by a rival nation and his family is betrayed by their most trusted allies. The series concluded in 2017 with the publication of its 16th and final novel. Arakawa's manga is the second time that the series has been adapted into a manga, with the first being a series by Chisato Nakamura, which ran from 1991 - 1996. Tanaka's story has also been adapted into anime twice, with the first being a 1991 straight-to-video series, and the second being a two season television series in 2015 that was a direct adaptation of Arakawa's manga.

Hiromu Arakawa is the acclaimed creator of Fullmetal Alchemist, which has a worldwide circulation of over 80 million copies is one of the most critically acclaimed and influential manga and anime franchises of the early 2000s. While she is continuing to work on The Heroic Legend of Arslan, she also recently began her latest manga series, Yomi No Tsugai (roughly translated as "The Hinge of the Underworld,") a fantasy series set in a world that resembles feudal Japan. That series was revealed earlier this year, on the 20th anniversary of Fullmetal Alchemist's original publication.

Hajime Isayama wrapped up his Attack on Titan manga earlier this year. While the series came to a divisive conclusion, it remains one of the most popular manga series in the world, with over 100 million copies in circulation worldwide. The second half of the anime's final season is scheduled to debut in Japan on Jan. 9. The series will be simulcasted internationally by Funimation, Crunchyroll and Hulu.
