Komi Can’t Communicate Announces Japanese Premiere Date, New Character

Komi Can't Communicate revealed new details and art from the anime's upcoming second season.

The popular high school comedy series announced on its official website that its second season will premiere in Japan on April 6. A new key visual, which shows Komi, Tadano and several of their classmates going to school during the autumn, was also revealed. The show also unveiled a new character who will make his anime debut in the upcoming season, Makoto Katai. Like the series' titular character, Makoto is impossibly shy. He has deliberately worked to make himself look like a dangerous delinquent in order to avoid the possibility of being bullied. Makoto will be voiced Shinichiro Kamio, who previously starred in The Seven Deadly Sins: Cursed by Light movie and the video game Daemon X Machina.

The original season of Komi Can't Communicate premiered internationally last October as a Netflix streaming exclusive. The show's continuation was announced shortly before the final episode of the first season aired, with an adorably awkward trailer that showed Shoko Komi attempting to communicate the new season's premiere window. Netflix has yet to confirm if the new season will premiere on its service at the same time as its Japanese release date, and has simply stated that the second season will be released on its platform sometime in 2022.

Komi Can't Communicate tells the story of Shoko Komi, a young woman who has never been seen socializing with her high school peers. Her classmates assume that she is just intentionally aloof and unapproachable, until Hitohito Tadano, a thoroughly average boy who has gone out of his way to not stand out, discovers that Komi is actually incredibly shy and genuinely wants to make more friends. Tadano becomes Komi's first friend and dedicates himself to helping the devastatingly awkward girl achieve her dream of making at least 99 friends before the end of high school.

The anime was produced by Pokémon anime studio OLM and is based on a manga created by Tomohito Oda, which was first published in 2016 in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine. The series has achieved both critical and commercial success, with its first collected volume pulling in a circulation of more than 5 million copies, and critics praising the series for its often absurdist sense of humor and heartwarming character development.

The manga has been officially localized into English and is distributed in North America by VIZ Media. The complete first season is now available for streaming on Netflix.
