The cast of Tokyo Revengers received a makeover inspired by Pop Team Epic in an all-new set of miniature acrylic standees
As reported by Crunchyroll, the new pieces of merchandise are available for preorder at Anime! Anime!. They were designed by the creator of Pop Team Epic himself, Bkub Okawa and include fan-favorite characters such as Takemichi Hanagaki, Manjiro "Mikey" Sano and Ken "Draken" Ryuguji. They each cost approximately $38 each and stand at around 40mm tall.
Despite the cute appearance of the standees, Ken Wakui's Tokyo Revengers is an action-packed series known for its depictions of brutal violence, and its characters are some of the most deadly non-superpowered fighters in anime. It tells the story of 26-year-old Takemichi Hanagaki who discovers that he has the power to travel exactly 12 years into the past after he falls in front of an oncoming train. He uses his new-found ability and knowledge of the future to try and save his middle school girlfriend Hinata Tachibana, who is killed by the Tokyo Manji gang along with her younger brother. Naoto, in 2017. Thus begins a tale of unwavering determination, budding and long-lasting friendships and exhilarating mysteries across time.
A 24-epsiode anime adaptation of the Tokyo Revengers manga produced by LIDENFILMS (Berserk (2016)) aired between April and Sept. 2021. It was so popular that it became the seventh most discussed show on Twitter globally in 2021. This is no surprise given Tokyo Revengers' gripping premise and the talent of the Japanese voice cast which includes Yuuki Shin (My Hero Academia), Yuu Hayashi (Haikyuu!!) and Tatsuhisa Suzuki (Free!).
There was, however, some controversy surrounding the censorship that Western localizations of the anime received, with the Buddhist manji swastika sign used on the jackets of the Tokyo Manji gang members being censored by rearranging scenes or even cutting scenes altogether. This was done to avoid any backlash that might have resulted from the symbol's resemblance to the Nazi swastika. Much to the relief of many fans, however, Muse Communication's official Southeast Asian and South Asian releases of the anime were uncensored, allowing Western audiences to view the show as it was intended.
The Pop Team Epic-inspired mini acrylic standees are available for preorder until Jan. 13. A second season of the Tokyo Revengers anime, Tokyo Revengers: Seiya Kessen-hen, is currently in production.
