It's been over three years since the third season of Overlord completed its 13-episode run, but fans of the popular isekai anime won't have to wait much longer to see the story continue, as Season 4 is set to debut next year.
The first teaser trailer, which is available on Kadokawa's official anime Youtube channel, confirms a premiere window of 2022 and gives viewers a preview of what the new season has in store. Filled with intense musical score and imagery, it appears that Season 4 of Overlord will feature plenty of action-packed and climactic moments.
Based on the light novels of the same name by Kugane Maruyama, the Overlord anime series made its debut in Japan in July 2015. Set in the year 2126, the story focuses on YGGDRASIL, a Dive Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game, and Momonga, a veteran player of the game. When YGGDRASIL is slated to be permanently shut down, Momonga refuses to log out and finds himself trapped within the game alongside the game's NPCs, who are developing sentience.
Overlord is produced by Madhouse (High School of the Dead, No Guns Life) and licensed by Funimation. Many members of the creative team for the first three seasons are returning for Season 4, like director Naoyuki Itou (Digimon: Data Squad), script supervisor Yukie Sugawara (The Vampire Dies in No Time) and character designer Satoshi Tasaki (Hunter x Hunter: Phantom Rouge).
Multiple members of the voice cast are returning as well. This includes Satoshi Hino (Ascendance of a Bookworm, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations) as Momonga/Ains, Yumi Hara (How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord) as Albedo, Sumire Uesaka (Restaurant to Another World, Girls und Panzer) as Shalltear, Emiri Katō (Puella Magi Madoka Magica, The Seven Deadly Sins) as Aura, Masayuki Katou (Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS, Zatch Bell) as Demiurge, Kenta Miyake (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) as Cocytus and Yumi Uchiyama (Bungo Stray Dogs, Tokyo Revengers) as Mare.
Overlord isn't the only ongoing anime series getting another season next year; for example, Made in Abyss, Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out!, How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom and The Case Study of Vanitas are all continuing their stories in 2022.
The first three seasons of Overlord are available to stream on Funimation, Crunchyroll and Amazon Prime Video.
