My Hero Academia is a hit superhero anime series with a high school twist, where talented youths can be enrolled at special schools such as U.A. to become pro heroes. Protagonist Izuku Midoriya strives to surpass his idol All Might someday, and not only did he inherit the power of One For All, but he also learned the truth of the seemingly invincible All Might.
Curiously, All Might has two personas in the anime, and his flamboyant and cheerful behavior as a hero is really just a second costume. In reality, All Might, or Toshinori Yagi, is a much humbler and surprisingly gentle, even insecure, person. Izuku is one of very few My Hero Academia characters to meet and speak to the real Toshinori Yagi, and the man under the costume is not who the public would expect to see. What is his MBTI, and how does he express it in the show?
All Might's MBTI Personality Type: ENFJ-A, The Protagonist
All Might's MBTI is ENFJ-A, which stands for Extraverted Intuitive Feeling Judging Assertive. Even though his muscle form's persona is a mask of sorts, the real Toshinori Yagi still has the true heart of a hero, and that reflects in his MBTI. For decades, he was the entire world's shonen protagonist, a humble hero who started from nothing and proved himself worthy of obtaining One For All from Nana Shimura, its 7th wielder. In many regards, All Might was just like Izuku himself, and his MBTI proves it.
According to MBTI guidelines, an ENFJ-A person is a hero at heart, and they believe that a greater cause has called them to action. Such people have a positive impact on those around them and can cheer them up and empower them, and they aren't afraid of a challenge, either. An ENFJ-A such as All Might is a born leader, ready to take on fearsome odds to inspire and protect the people important to them, and they enjoy seeing their friends and loved ones realizing their own potential. Thus, an ENFJ-A is a nurturing sort of person as well as a bold hero, and that definitely describes All Might, even including his meeker skinny form.
Many of All Might's most personal scenes demonstrate his ENFJ-A nature, and not just his thrilling action sequences against villains such as the Nomu and his nemesis, All For One. All Might shows his true personality not with his fists, but when he forms a personal connection with Izuku Midoriya and opens his heart to the boy. All Might also abandon his flamboyant persona around other characters such as Katsuki Bakugo, detective Naomasa Tsukauchi and certainly his old mentor, Gran Torino. During these scenes, All Might makes it clear that while he has the fearless heart of a superhero, he is also a sensitive and selfless person who wants what's best for others. All Might's greatest accomplishment isn't the United States of Smash, but his ability to prepare Izuku to realize his own dreams as Deku, the new #1 hero.
All Might As An ENFJ-A In My Hero Academia
All Might is a feeler more than a thinker, according to the MBTI metric, and he intuitively chose Izuku as his successor based on Izuku's indomitable will and Izuku's reckless courage when a sludge villain attacked Katsuki Bakugo in the streets. All Might also has a tendency to make things up as he went along, in regards to his new teaching career at U.A., and he admitted that he isn't fully qualified to be an instructor. That's why he sent Izuku to train with Gran Torino instead, who is far more insightful and meticulous as a teacher. All Might is a fighter and a friend, not a lecturer, as per his MBTI type.
The "protagonist" MBTI type has a tendency to help others at any cost, and value someone else's happiness and achievements more than their own. Sure enough, All Might takes pride, not in his own career, but Izuku's, and Katsuki Bakugo's as well. Despite his immense fame and popularity, All Might is never seen reveling in the attention or acting vainly. His muscle form's persona enjoys the attention, but the real Toshinori Yagi knows that it's just a job, and so long as people still need his help, that job is never done. He will never stop hearing the call of duty, and it frustrates him terribly that he can no longer help his fellow pro heroes fight back against the League of Villains and the Meta Liberation Army. Fortunately, though, All Might invested One For All wisely in Izuku, and that should satisfy the selfless side of his ENFJ-A personality. His era is over, but Deku's is just beginning.
