A new Jujutsu Kaisen 0 trailer provides an even deeper look into the origins of several of the series' key characters.
The new trailer was released to the official Toho Animation YouTube channel and is set to the movie's new theme song, "Itto" by King Gnu. The trailer begins with a scene of Suguru Geto, the arrogant sorcerer who serves as the prequel story's primary antagonist. The trailer also features several shots of Satoru Gojo and Maki Zenin before previewing the story of the prequel's main protagonist, Yuta Okkotsu, and his tragic relationship with his childhood friend, Rikka. The trailer ends with several elaborately animated action shots of Jujutsu High's sorcerers charging into battle and Yuta taking control of his Curse.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is based on a manga that was originally titled "Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School," which was created by Gege Akutami. The short miniseries was the first story to be set in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, and introduced many of the characters and concepts that would later be expanded upon in Akutami's main manga series, which began publication about a year after Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School was completed. Once Jujutsu Kaisen became a hit, Akutami's original miniseries was retroactively renamed Jujutsu Kaisen 0 to reflect its connection to the popular manga. Sunghoo Park, who directed the first season of the series' anime adaptation as well as the new prequel movie, recently revealed that he originally wanted to cover the prequel's story in the first few episodes of the anime, but ultimately decided to begin the show where the manga starts off, with Yuji Itadori's introduction to the world of sorcerers and Curses.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 takes place before Yuji comes to Jujutsu High and instead tells the origin story of Yuta Okkotsu. When he was younger, Yuta promised his lifelong friend, Rikka Orimoto, that he would marry her someday. Unfortunately for them both, Rikka passed away at a young age, and her soul has transformed into a Curse, a dangerous spirit that now haunts Yuta and attacks anyone who gets close to him. Driven to despair, Yuta isolates himself from others, but one day his solitary life changes forever when he meets Satoru Gojo, a sorcerer who gives Yuta the chance to take control of his Curse and use its powers for good.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 will premiere in Japan on Dec. 24. A release for the movie outside of Japan has not yet been announced, but given the series' global popularity, it's safe to assume that it will be released internationally soon. The first season of the anime series is available for streaming on Crunchyroll and Funimation.
