Godzilla Anniversary Short Brings Back The King of Monster’s Weirdest Foe

A new teaser trailer gives a brief glimpse at Godzilla's upcoming rematch with Hedorah, the Smog Monster.

The new clip comes from a new short movie that will be released as part of the upcoming Godzilla Fest 2021. Godzilla Fest is yearly celebration of the King of the Monsters, and this year the festival will be streamed on Nov. 3 on the official Godzilla YouTube channel. The full short will make its premiere at the festival, and was directed by Kazuhiro Nakagawa. Godzilla and Hedorah's new fight was shot over the course of three days at Toho Studios, and reusues the monster costumes that were last seen in 2004's Godzilla: Final Wars, the movie that celebrated the 50th anniversary of the franchise.

The short is an homage to the classic movie Godzilla vs. The Smoke Monster and is being released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the movie, which was originally released in 1971. In the original film, Hedorah is an alien from the Dark Gas Nebula, who came to Earth to feed on its excessive pollution. While the monster was easily defeated by Godzilla in its larval forms, it grew substantially after consuming enough smog and eventually evolved into its final form -- a sludge covered humanoid with sideways eyes -- and almost succeeded in killing the King of the Monsters in front of Mt. Fuji. Godzilla eventually manages to overpower the alien, thanks to some help from electrodes brought in by Japan's human defenders, but not before the monster takes one of the green giant's eyes. Hedorah has only made two brief appearances in the series since, once in the before mentioned Godzilla: Final Wars, and also during an episode of the Godzilla Island TV series, where it was again defeated by Godzilla.

In addition to the new short, Godzilla Fest will also host a panel for Godzilla: Singular Point, the 13 episode anime series by studio BONES (My Hero Academia, Eureka Seven,) that premiered on Netflix earlier this year. The series featured the return of Jet Jaguar, another one of Godzilla's classic opponents from the 1970s.

Adam Winguard, the director of Godzilla vs. Kong, will also make an appearance at the festival. Godzilla vs. Kong received a simultaneous release to both theaters and HBO Max earlier this year, and went on to become of 2021's highest grossing films. The festival will also celebrate the upcoming 60th anniversary of the original release of Mothra, and has teased new details about that classic kaiju movie's new 4K restoration.
