The second season of The Rising of the Shield Hero is expected to premiere sometime in 2022, and Crunchyroll has released a new character trailer to give fans a preview of what the story has in store for protagonist Naofumi.
Season 1 of the anime ended with Naofumi deciding to leave the country that had made his life a living hell; however, based on this new trailer, it does not appear that the rest of the world will be any kinder to the shield hero. Partway through the video, Naofumi asks, "Is this world going to take everything from me ... again?" The subsequent imagery further teases the difficult challenges and brutal violence to come.
The original isekai light novel series of the same name by Aneko Yusagi was first released in 2012 as a web novel on the user-generated publishing site Shōsetsuka ni Narō before it was acquired and re-published by Media Factory. As of June 25, 2019, the series has produced 22 volumes worth of content and has sold over three million copies.
The first season of the anime adaptation of The Rising of the Shield Hero debuted on Jan. 9, 2019. While it initially ignited controversy with its depictions of slavery and the framing of a false rape accusation, the anime went on to receive generally positive reviews from critics and it won the Best Girl category at the 2020 Crunchyroll Anime Awards for the character of Raphtalia. Moreover, it developed a passionate fanbase that is very excited for the new season. One commenter on the new trailer wrote, "This anime is so underrated, I honestly can't wait for season 2, " and another stated, "Can't wait for this to come out!!!"
Kinema Citrus (Made in Abyss, Black Bullet) is once again producing The Rising of the Shield Hero, with studio DR Movie assisting with the animation for Season 2. Takao Abo (Eureka Seven, Lunar Legend Tsukihime) continues as the show's director with Keigo Koyanagi (Dragon Pilot: Hisone and Masotan, Sirius the Jaeger) overseeing the series composition and Mashiro Suwa (My Hero Academia, Bungou Stray Dogs) designing the characters.
Multiple members of the voice cast are returning for Season 2 of The Rising of the Shield Hero as well, including Kaito Ishikawa (World Trigger, Haikyu!! To The Top) as Naofumi and Asami Seto (My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!) as Raphtalia.
The Rising of the Shield Hero is scheduled to debut as part of the spring 2022 anime season. Other shows that are expected to premiere in 2022 include Girls' Frontline, Love After World Domination and the third season of Ascendance of a Bookworm.
