Attack on Titan’s Final Volume Gets Release Date, Retailer Variant Covers

The English release of Attack on Titan will wrap this fall when the final volume of Hajime Isayama's bleak epic hits store shelves.

Publisher Kadokawa announced today that final collected volume of Attack on Titan will hit store shelves on Oct. 19. In addition to the standard release that will be available at all retailers, three special editions of the series' finale will be sold exclusively at three chains: Kinokuniya USA, Barnes and Noble, and Books-A-Million. Books-A-Million will get a special variant cover drawn by Isayama himself, while the Barnes and Noble edition will feature an exclusive poster of Mikasa Ackerman. Customers who pick up their copy at Barnes and Noble will also be able to separately purchase a limited edition tote bag that is also branded with an image of Mikasa. Kinokuniya USA stores will receive a different variant cover and will give customers a free shikishi art board featuring an illustration of the series' characters as kids. All of the special variants and bonus items are a limited time offer and will only be available while supplies last.

The final, divisive chapter of Attack on Titan was published earlier this year, but hype for the series remains high as MAPPA continues to work on the final half of the last season of the anime adaptation, which is currently scheduled to begin airing sometime during January 2022. Attack on Titan recently partnered with environmental organization Change For The Blue to add Titan-shaped recycle bins to Isayama's hometown of Oita City. The Titan-themed recycling bins are part of a campaign to increase awareness of the city's recycling programs.

Isayama initially pitched Attack on Titan to Japan's premiere manga publication, Weekly Shonen Jump, but was rejected. Kodansha picked up the series, however, and began publishing it in 2009. Shonen Jump's loss was Kadokawa's gain, as the series is now one of the most successful manga ever created, and now has over 100 million copies in circulation worldwide. Wit Studio premiered their anime adaptation of the series in 2013 to critical acclaim. After 3 seasons produced by Wit, the show unexpectedly shifted production over to Jujutsu Kaisen animation studio MAPPA beginning with the first half of the series' fourth and final season.

Warner Bros. is currently producing an American live-action remake of the series. Andy Muscetti, who is currently directing the upcoming DCEU Flash film starring Ezra Miller, has signed on to direct. Two previous live-action adaptations of the series were produced in Japan, but were released to a lukewarm reception from fans and critics alike, who both decried the changes made to Isayama's source material and the quality of the movies' special effects.
