It’s been almost seven years since the first season of Mizuho Kusanagi’s fantasy shojo manga, Yona of the Dawn, aired in 2014-15. The series left viewers with an exciting cliffhanger and many unanswered questions as we see action scenes involving Yona and her fellow warriors returning to the kingdom of Kouka. Fans are therefore left to wonder whether or not an epic concluding second season is in the works for this series.
The Plot Of Yona Of The Dawn
Long ago, the nation of Kouka was discovered by the Crimson Dragon God. He descended from the heavens as a human and became the Crimson Dragon King. As he watched over his kingdom, he discovered that the humans who lived on his land were evil and had a greedy desire for power. The Crimson Dragon King was able to restore power and prosperity in Kouka with the help of four Dragon Gods. After the death of the Crimson Dragon King, the four Dragon Warriors went their separate ways and established five tribes around the kingdom.
Now, a new adventure awaits the four Dragon Warriors. Princess Yona lives a sheltered lifestyle as the only daughter of a pacifist king. However, her life changes dramatically when her father is killed by her childhood friend, Su-Won. Su-Won overtakes the throne of Kouka, resulting in Yona and her bodyguard, Hak, fleeing the kingdom. Yona and Hak seek the help of the four Dragon Warriors to reclaim her rightful place on the throne and save her country.
In the anime, the first season only focuses on recruiting the four Dragon Warriors. Each warrior gets their own story arc to help develop their character and personality, except the last dragon, Zeno, who is only featured in the final episode. Fans were upset that Zeno didn’t get a personal character arc in the series, although a two-part OVA was later produced that details his past. Furthermore, the series has an open-ended conclusion: viewers are left to wonder whether or not Yona ever succeeds in stopping Su-Won, and if her relationship with Hak blossoms into something more. Even though the ending wasn't ideal, it left viewers hoping that another season may eventually come to fruition.
Will There Be A Season 2 Of Yona of the Dawn?
As of yet, there is no news of a possible second season of Yona of the Dawn. Fans have speculated that there may not be a second season because of the poor merchandise sales for the series, and the Yona of the Dawn social media sites are no longer promoting the show.
Currently, 36 volumes of the ongoing manga series have been published, meaning there’s enough content for a second season in which viewers could see more of the legendary Dragon Warriors’ myth, dive a bit deeper into the relationship between Hak and Yona, and reach a satisfying conclusion regarding Yona's reclaiming of the throne from Su-Won.
Nonetheless, as nearly years have passed since the first season aired, and with no new updates about the anime series, the possibility of a second season seems highly unlikely. However, this doesn’t stop fans of the series from hoping for a continuation.
