The third movie in the franchise, My Hero Academia: World Heroes Mission, also takes place during the anime's fifth season and recently premiered in Japan to the best box office performance in the series' history. Legendary Pictures also just announced that their long-in-development live-action adaptation of the series had found its director, Shinsuke Sato, who previously directed the live-action Bleach movie, as well as one of the Japanese Death Note movies.
My Hero Academia is one of the biggest franchises to premiere in the last decade. Created by Kohei Horikoshi, the original manga was first published in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2014, and has sold over 50 million copies worldwide. MHA was inspired by Horikoshi's love of American superhero comics, combined with influences from Japanese series such as Naruto and the live-action tokusatsu series Kamen Rider. The popular series tells the story of a world where most people are born with a unique super power, or "Quirk." The series centers on Izuku Midoriya, an idealistic and self-sacrificing young boy who is bullied for being one of the rare people born without a Quirk, but is suddenly given the chance to become a hero when he inherits one of the world's most powerful special abilities.
The My Hero Academia series is currently streaming on Netflix, Hulu, Crunchyroll and Funimation, with the latter two services airing a simulcast of the current season. The first film in the series, Two Heroes, is available via Netflix, while the second movie, Heroes Rising, is on Hulu. An international release for World Heroes Mission has not been announced at this time. The manga is publish in English and distributed by VIZ Media.
