Boruto: Konoha’s Latest Traitor Is Finally Revealed

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Chapter #59 of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, “Knight,” by Masashi Kishimoto, Mikio Ikemoto, Mari Morimoto and Snir Aharon, now available in English from Viz Media.

Sumire has gotten more time in the spotlight recently in the Boruto manga following the invasion and death of Isshiki Ōtsutsuki. She's officially become Amado's assistant as the Kara traitor works with Konoha's science team to find a way to remove Boruto's Karma mark, stopping him from becoming Momoshiki in the near future. And, of course, she's personally interested in the role because she has a crush on Naruto's son.

But come Chapter #59, Sumire's importance has grown exponentially again as she unveils Konoha's latest traitor -- Amado himself.

In the chapter, Sumire is taken aback when Amado speaks to Kawaki in private about rebuilding his Karma. By doing so, he can access the power of an Ōtsutsuki without having to worry about Isshiki's soul claiming him as a vessel. She knows it's a conversation that should be had with Naruto, Shikamaru or even Katasuke's science cell around. Yet, here Amado is, giving Kawaki a dangerous decision to make alone, and worse: egging him on to take it after knowing the danger it can cause.

When Kawaki departs, angry with Amado for basically calling him a power-hungry brat, Sumire then wades on Amado. She can't believe he'd do such an irresponsible thing, making it clear she's been observing his sketchy behavior since Kawaki returned, injured after the Isshiki fight. While he did appear concerned with the kid's welfare, it was from a selfish standpoint, making it seem like the teen's just a weapon rather than a human. Moreover, she's against Amado manipulating Kawaki by telling him this is the only way to stop Code and save his father-like savior, Naruto.

Amado scoffs in response, asking her if she's Shikamaru's spy. Sumire isn't intimidated, though, resisting his insults and making it clear she's there of her own accord to look after Konoha's best interests. The exchange then grows more heated with Amado insulting her intelligence and telling her she should have played the long, silent con to get more intel from him.

Amado has a point, too. He'd know a thing or two about strategy having been Isshiki's main scientist before backstabbing Kara by teaming up with Koji Kashin. Sumire asks what he's plotting and he calls her "stupid," making it clear he's got a very shady endgame at hand. Chapter #59 ends there, leaving readers to wonder what Amado's plan is and if he'll kill Sumire to silence her.

The fact he's been open about his betrayal in front of Sumire raises even more questions, while the way he scolds her when she confronts him about his lack of warmth and care, as well as insubordination, confirms he thinks she's just a pest scuppering his plan. Sadly, it seems that Amado's succeeded in sowing seeds of corruption in Kawaki, which could complete his heel turn down the line in the Boruto series.
