This is not the first time Netflix has brought Godzilla to life via anime. Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters was released by the streamer in January 2018, with Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle and Godzilla: The Planet Eater following shortly after. The anime sequels received a mixed reception, with criticism focused on the animation and characters.
Although plot details about Godzilla Singular Point remain scarce, the series will feature a mix of traditional hand-drawn animation and computer-generated effects. Netflix is producing the series alongside anime studios Bones and Orange. Other Netflix projects from the studios include Orange's Beastars and Bones' Supercrooks, which is based on the comic by Mark Millar and Leinil Francis Yu. Kazue Kato (Blue Exorcist) provided the character designs while Studio Ghibli's Eiji Yamamori designed Godzilla.
Godzilla debuted in 1954 and has been the subject of several films and comic book series, as well as animation. Its next feature film will be Godzilla vs. Kong, slated to premiere in 2021.
Directed by Atsushi Takahashi and written by Toh Enjoe, Godzilla Singular Point will premiere in 2021.
