The following contains potential spoilers for Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi, which premieres on May 27, on Disney+.
It's that day again -- May 4. The day when Star Wars fans across the planet celebrate a galaxy far, far way. It's also a day when Disney releases all kinds new material, so fans were eagerly anticipating announcements -- and they weren't disappointed. There was a new Star Wars: Obi-Wan comic that showed the Jedi Master's Force prowess as a youngling. There were announcements about new Black Series collectibles. Disney even launched a new mindfulness series from The Clone Wars actor Ashley Eckstein.
While all of that was important to various parts of the fandom, the biggest release on Star Wars Day was the second trailer for the coming Obi-Wan Kenobi series. It was slightly shorter than the first trailer, but it packed more of a lightsaber-filled punch as the series' premiere date inches ever closer. Featuring a plethora of inquisitors, Owen Lars and the Obi-Wan himself, the trailer might have also shown a moment that could become iconic for years to come.
There's no doubt that fans are excited to see the various, brutal inquisitors make their live-action debuts. However, there's no comparing that to the hype about Darth Vader's domineering return. Even actor Ewan McGregor was terrified when he saw Vader approaching him, while filming. So, it's clear that the Dark Lord will be a terrible force when he finds out that Obi-Wan is alive and within his reach of his mechanical grasp.
There's also another realization that has to happen. By the time that A New Hope rolls around, Obi-Wan already knew that Vader was Anakin, but he has to actively become aware of that at some point. The Obi-Wan Kenobi series is the perfect place for that to happen. The emotional effects of such a realization would be catastrophic for Obi-Wan and provide a dark place for his character to grow out of. While one might think that Obi-Wan would know about Vader's identiy 10 years after Revenge of the Sith, it would actually make perfect sense for him not to know that Vader was his former apprentice.
Clearly, Obi-Wan will have heard of Vader before the series starts. However, he will have no reason to believe that the Dark Lord is Anakin until he can feel his presence in the Force. Obi-Wan has been hiding on Tatooine for the past decade, so he hasn't gotten close enough to Vader to figure out who is is. The new trailer might have shown the jaw-dropping moment when Obi-Wan finally connects the dots. In the final seconds, fans got their first non-promotional views of Vader. His arm was being attached. Then, his chest computer was connected to his breastplate.
Directly after those Vader teases, the trailer smash cut to a shot of Obi-Wan looking towards the ground. All of a sudden, though, he looked up, and his face showed a broad spectrum of emotions. In a single look, he communicated feelings of disbelief, anger, fear and guilt. While it could be just a leading bit of editing, it sure looked like the moment when Obi-Wan realized that Darth Vader was actually his former apprentice. More specifically, Obi-Wan realized that he had created Vader by not finishing the job on Mustafar. If that's, indeed, what's happening in that shot, it will no doubt go down in history as one of Star Wars' most iconic moments.
