It looks like Doctor Strange may get off on the wrong foot with one of the film's variants.
The latest promo for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness shows Captain Carter's shield being thrown at Stephen Strange in the Illuminati's chamber room, teasing that she is not the sorcerer's biggest fan.
The new promo also all but confirm that Patrick Stewart will return as Charles Xavier / Professor X, giving him a yellow wheelchair that is reminiscent of the one seen in X-Men: The Animated Series. It also features clear looks at Zombie Strange and Strange Supreme. While it was initially believed that this Strange Supreme was the same version as the character from Diseny+'s What If...?, Benedict Cumberbatch said that they are not the same variant. "What If...? is a beautiful riff of a potential. And this is something different," he noted.
This is the second look at Captain Carter to come from the film's promotional materials. The first TV spot featured the British hero going head to head with Scarlet Witch / Wanda Maximoff in the destroyed hall of the Illuminati. Neither clip reveals the face of Captain Carter, but both videos provide clear looks at her iconic Union Jack shield.
Captain Carter made her debut in the pilot episode of the animated series What If...?, which takes place in an alternate universe where Agent Peggy Carter is injected with the super-soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers. However, instead of the stars and stripes, she dons a uniform and shield that bear the Union Jack to honor her British heritage. The character was one of the breakout stars of the series, eventually earning her own five-issue comic series.
Hayley Atwell, who made her Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) debut as Agent Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger, returned to voice the character in the Disney+ series after appearing in various MCU films, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Ant-Man and Avengers: Endgame. She also made a cameo in Avengers: Age of Ultron and led the ABC series Agent Carter, which follows the titular agent after the events of The First Avenger. Since the videos do not show Captain Carter's face, it is unclear if Atwell will reprise the role for the Doctor Strange sequel.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange / Doctor Strange, Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo, Benedict Wong as Wong, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer and newcomer Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez. The film releases in theaters on May 6.
