Lightyear star Chris Evans recently proposed a new Disneyland concept, inspired by some of the most stunning scenes in the upcoming film's trailer.
Evans, along with co-stars Keke Palmer and Taika Waititi, recently sat down for a reaction video following the release of Lightyear's second trailer. During one of the trailer's early scenes, in which Buzz Lightyear's hyperspeed ship passes through a ring-shaped portal, Evans exclaimed "I want to fly through those rings." He then not-so-subtly indicated what the film's parent company should build on the idea, saying, "Those, I mean like that, that looks... That should be a ride, Disney."
Lightyear's recent trailer provided a clearer look at the Toy Story hero's new origin. In this world, pilot Buzz Lightyear tests a new Star Command vehicle capable of long-distance travel, only for he and robot cat companion Sox to somehow end up time traveling more than sixty years in the future. There, Buzz discovers the planet they launched from is now overrun by the forces of Emperor Zurg-- depicted as a massive robotic creature. They must return home with the assistance of an "inexperienced crew" led by Izzy Hawthorne (Palmer), granddaughter of Lightyear's former ally Alisha Hawthorne.
First appearing in Pixar's 1995 debut film Toy Story, Buzz Lightyear was initially Woody's rival, a space ranger toy for their owner Andy who fully believed his IP backstory. However, upon coming to terms with his true origin (after having an existential crisis), Buzz became Woody's closest friend across the next three Toy Story films, often serving as co-leader of Andy's toy gang during adventures.
The character is also Toy Story's most prominent spinoff character, receiving a 2D film, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins; and subsequent animated series, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, in 2000. Both spinoffs followed Buzz's in-universe adventures with his Star Command space ranger team, battling Evil Emperor Zurg and other foes who threaten galactic peace.
In addition to Lightyear, Pixar recently dropped the supernatural coming-of-age comedy Turning Red on Disney+, which was met with positive reception. No future Pixar films have been announced yet, though Disney will also release the animated/live-action hybrid movie Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers and 2D film The Bob's Burgers Movie -- an IP claimed through 2019's 20th Century Fox acquisition -- in May.
Lightyear blasts into cinemas on June 17.
