Mark Wahlberg Says He’ll Be Retiring ‘Sooner Than Later’

Action and comedy star Mark Wahlberg may be nearing the end of his career in Hollywood, according to the actor himself in a recent interview.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Wahlberg touched on his upcoming film, Father Stu, stating, "I feel like this is starting a new chapter for me in that, now, doing things like this -- real substance -- can help people... I definitely want to focus on making more. I wouldn't say necessarily just faith-based content but things that will help people. So, hopefully this movie will open a door for not only myself but for lots of other people in Hollywood to make more meaningful content." When asked about when he saw his career coming to a close, the actor said, "Sooner rather than later, probably."

He went on to explain what this stage of his career looked like and his growing standards when it came to potential projects. The actor, who has four teenage children, said, "It's gotta be something special to really bring me, you know, to leave home, to leave those guys behind," Wahlberg explained, adding, "Because it's the biggest sacrifice in the making for sure."

Wahlberg's film debut came in 1994 with Renaissance Man, in which he appeared alongside Danny DeVito. He went on to appear in blockbusters such as 2001's Planet of the Apes, The Italian Job, The Departed and more. He also went on to produce hit shows including HBO's Entourage, which ran for eight seasons between 2004 and 2011. The show was partially inspired by Wahlberg's experience and antics in Hollywood.

Most recently, Wahlberg starred alongside Tom Holland in Sony Pictures' video game film adaptation, Uncharted. Wahlberg played Victor "Sully" Sullivan-- Nathan Drake's friend and mentor. Despite Uncharted's controversies and mixed critical reception, the film has grossed $375.2 million on a budget of $120 million.

Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman recently declared the film a success and suggested that it had the potential to spawn an entire franchise. "With over $100 million in box office worldwide in just one weekend, and a 90 percent positive audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, Uncharted is a new hit movie franchise for the company," Rothman said. No announcements concerning a sequel have yet been made and it's uncertain if Wahlberg would be willing to reprise his role for one.

Sony Pictures' Uncharted is currently playing in theaters now.
