WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Spider-Punk #1 by Cody Ziglar, Justin Mason, Jim Charalampidis and VC's Travis Lanham, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
The first issue of Hobie Brown/Spider-Punk's very first solo series just introduced Earth-138's version of Riri Williams.
Spider-Punk #1 officially hit shelves on Wednesday, April 6 from writer "Calamitous" Cody Ziglar, artist "Jammin'" Justin Mason, colorist "Jumpin'" Jim Charalampidis and letterer "Tactical" Travis Lanham. The issue marks the debut of the Spider-Band, with Spider-Punk, Karl Morningdew/Captain Anarchy and Robbie Banner/Hulk being joined by newcomers Paola, Rick and, of course, Riri Williams.
Unlike her Earth-616 counterpart, Earth-138's Riri is not Ironheart -- she's RiotHeart. Like Ironheart, she sports a custom suit of Iron Man-esque armor. What sets RiotHeart apart from Ironheart, however, is her armor's weathered look, its punk-rock spikes and its added artwork. When she's not wearing her armor, Earth-138's Riri sports a leather jacket, ripped jeans, a studded choker and a half-shaved hairstyle.
All in all, Spider-Punk #1 features plenty of punk rock-inspired material fans of the genre are sure to recognize. For instance, the issue opens on the line, "I'm a street-walkin' cheetah with a heart full of napalm" -- which is taken from the lyrics of the song "Search and Destroy" by Iggy and the Stooges. Moreover, the issue ends with a devilock-wearing variant of Taskmaster uttering the line, "If you're gonna scream, scream with me!" -- which is taken from the song "Hybrid Moments" by The Misfits.
Created by Dan Slott and Olivier Coipel, Earth-138's Spider-Punk first appeared in 2014's Amazing Spider-Man #10 as a punk rock-inspired variant of Hobie Brown who became Spider-Man instead of Peter Parker. (Back on Earth-616, Hobie is known as both the Prowler and the Hornet.) Of course, the designation of Earth-138 is a reference to the Misfits song "We Are 138" (which is itself possibly a reference to the George Lucas film THX 1138).
"The creative team aptly captures the vibrant world of Earth-138, filling it with spikes, mohawks, and emo hairstyles in a multitude of colors, each reflecting the personality of its wearer," CBR's own Sayantan Gayen wrote in his official review for Spider-Punk #1. "Hobie is just as reckless as he was in his first appearance, but this time he has friends who keep him straight. It is endearing to hear them have a banter amongst themselves. Spider-Punk #1 welcomes new and established readers with an end that promises even more rockin' battles."
Written by Cody Ziglar, illustrated by Justin Mason, colored by Jim Charalampidis and lettered by VC's Travis Lanham, Spider-Punk #1 is on sale now from Marvel Comics. Issue #2 goes on sale Wednesday, May 11.
