Comments from an insider close to Ezra Miller provide insight into The Flash star's emotional state leading up to their recent string of violent outbursts.
Speaking to Rolling Stone, the insider said Miller experienced "frequent meltdowns" while on the set of the upcoming DC Extended Universe film, describing the incidents as Miller "losing it." However, the insider clarified that these "meltdowns" did not involve shouting or violence toward others. They further described Miller's seemingly self-critical behavior, possibly related to their ability as an actor. "Ezra would get a thought in [their] head and say, 'I don't know what I’m doing,'" the insider said.
The Flash wrapped filming in 2021 and is set for a 2023 release, but Miller's involvement in future DCEU projects and other Warner Bros. properties is now up in the air. Miller's starring role as Barry Allen/The Flash is reportedly on "pause" following two violent incidents involving the actor in March.
At a Hawaii bar on March 28, Miller reportedly refused to calm down after exhibiting aggressive behavior toward patrons and was later arrested on charges of harassment and disorderly conduct. After Miller's release on bail, a couple the actor was staying with filed a restraining order against Miller for allegedly threatening to kill the couple. They claimed Miller stole the woman’s passport and the man’s wallet and ID cards. According to the court document, Miller allegedly "burst" into the couple's bedroom, saying, "I will bury you and your slut wife."
The March incidents were not the first time Miller exhibited troubling behavior in public. In 2020, Miller was caught on video choking a woman and pushing her to the floor. Since the woman in the video regards Miller playfully and appears to joke about having a fight before Miller grabs her, some perceived the incident at the time as simply a joke taken too far.
In January, Miller posted a now-deleted video of themself speaking to "the Beulaville chapter of the North Carolina Ku Klux Klan." In the video, Miller urges KKK members to kill themselves. "Look, if y'all wanna die, I suggest just killing yourselves with your own guns, OK?" the actor says. "Otherwise, keep doing exactly what you're doing right now -- and you know what I'm talking about -- and then, you know, we'll do it for you if that's really what you want." While some fans praised Miller for their candor in denouncing racists, others expressed concern over Miller's behavior in the video and the explicitly violent nature of the message.
Barring any further delays, The Flash arrives in theaters on June 23, 2023.
