Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man Cosplays as X-Men’s Bishop

Hip hop artist Method Man (Clifford Smith Jr.) -- perhaps best known for his work with the influential rap group the Wu-Tang Clan -- recently suited up as one of Marvel Comics' X-Men, sharing cosplay photos of himself as the futuristic mutant known as Bishop.

The photos in question were posted to Method Man's Instagram page. They see the rapper sporting Bishop's classic costume -- complete with the instantly-recognizable "M" brand on his eye -- and brandishing one of the character's signature laser guns. One photo in particular is especially intense, with Method Mad preparing to "fire" the weapon with his tongue sticking out.

Created by John Byrne and Whilce Portacio, Lucas Bishop first appeared in 1991's Uncanny X-Men #282 -- with his first full appearance being recognized as the subsequent issue #283. Dubbed "the last X-Man," Bishop hails from Earth-1191, an alternate future in which the mutant-hunting robots known as the Sentinels reign supreme over North America. Played by Omar Sy, the character made his first live-action appearance in the 2014 film X-Men: Days of Future Past.

It's certainly no secret that Method Man is rather familiar with comic book culture, with the Wu-Tang Clan's referencing characters like Spider-Man and Doctor Doom in their music. In addition to Wu-Tang Clan songs being used in Marvel's Netflix shows (namely Luke Cage and The Defenders), Method Man even made a guest appearance as himself in Luke Cage Season 1, performing an original rap dedicated to the eponymous character to boot. Other Wu-Tang alums had a more direct role in the Netflix lineup as well, with Ghostface Killah appearing in Luke Cage Season 2 and RZA directing an episode of Iron Fist Season 1.

Moreover, Method Man has some experience with Marvel comic books, co-writing 2016's Ghost Rider X-Mas Special for Marvel's Infinite Comics lineup, as well as the "Death" story featured in this year's one-shot comic book based on the Marvel's Voices podcast. Speaking of podcasts, Method Man was also enlisted to voice the character of Ben Urich in the audio drama adaption of Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross' Marvels.
