Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War is a popular seinen rom-com series based on Aka Akasaka's popular manga. So far the anime adaptation has received two short seasons, both packed with colorful and creative antics at the private Shuichin Academy. There, the student council president and vice president are locked in a stubborn but passionate battle of wits to see who will confess their love to the other first.
Student council president Miyuki Shirogane is a very smart and hardworking boy from a humble family, and he won't let the wealthy Kaguya Shinomiya push him around with her influence and prestige. These two are madly in love but also bitterly determined to win their private love feud, and Season 2 left the war wide open for either party to win, or perhaps both or even neither. Will the recently confirmed Season 3 for Kaguya-Sama bring a winner?
What Kaguya & Miyuki Have Done So Far?
Season 2 of Kaguya-Sama saw the love war escalate in intensity and complexity, especially as the supporting cast grew and some council members started taking sides. Chika Fujiwara was still a neutral and chaotic third party in the feud, but Miko Iino, the council's newest member, views Kaguya as a sinister seducer while Yu Ishigami has his hands full with his own drama while peripherally supporting Miyuki. Meanwhile, Kaguya tried a new tactic -- getting closer to Miyuki through his younger sister Kei -- and Miyuki aimed to impress Kaguya with his new term as the student council president while also wowing her with his interest in astronomy.
Overall, Kaguya has a slight advantage with her family's endless wealth and resources, and she can plan very far ahead and back Miyuki into a corner. Miyuki, by contrast, takes advantage of Kaguya's habit of getting easily flustered and provoked as a tsundere. He's not exactly a stone statue, but he can keep his cool better than Kaguya. Miyuki also likes to put Kaguya in the spotlight and see if he can crack her cool, aloof exterior.
What Kaguya-Sama Season 3 Might Bring?
Kaguya-Sama Season 2 concluded with an explosive showdown (literally) but no winner was decided despite all the fireworks. The season finale involved a test of courage and blowing up a giant balloon, and though everyone panicked when it popped, neither Miyuki nor Kaguya could convince the other to yield any ground. The two stubbornly but warmly faced one another at the end, wordlessly defying each other to back down. It's clear they remain evenly matched as Kaguya-Sama moves from Season 2 to the promised Season 3, and anything can happen.
Season 3 might end up being more of the same between Miyuki and Kaguya, but the supporting cast could continue to grow and deepen, adding new drama and stakes to the main plot and side stories alike. Such side plots may impact the main love story and convince one party to yield, but if that happened, the other might feel dissatisfied with their victory. Miyuki and Kaguya aren't just stubborn -- they are also proud, each wanting to win the love battle through their own wits and effort, rather than the aid of outside drama.
Given how Kaguya-Sama is a comedy series, and many comedy plots end with nobody getting their way, it's conceivable that Season 3 will end the love feud in a tie -- or Miyuki and Kaguya could concede at the same time and realize they've been frivolous and petty all this time. They might simultaneously "snap out of it," fall into each other's arms and become a real couple at last, with Yu and Chika cheering them on. The narrative would quickly grow lopsided if either Miyuki or Kaguya won and the loser had defeat hanging over their head for the rest of the show. For the sake of balance, the characters' happiness and the unpredictable nature of comedy, it may be best for both or neither to win.
Even if Miyuki and Kaguya do become a real couple and end their current feud, they could always launch an open-ended challenge to reach the next milestone first, such as saying "I love you" or, years in the future, to see who will move in with whom. They have the rest of their lives to play all kinds of games -- they don't have to stay hung up on this current feud forever, and Season 3 of Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War is in a solid position to prove that.
