In Voltron: Legendary Defender, the five Paladins of Voltron, led by Shiro and later Keith of the Blades of Marmora (and back to Shiro), must save the entire universe from the tyranny of Emperor Zarkon and his son, Lotor. Amidst this epic story, however, there's still time for more personal side quests.
In Season 4, not long after the defeat of Emperor Zarkon, Pidge (the Green Lion's pilot) finds a lead on her wayward brother Matt Holt, and she vows to find him, no matter the danger. Ever since she became a Paladin, Pidge swore to find her missing father and brother, and her chance is here at last. It's time to take it.
Pidge's Tricky Trail To Matt
Pidge explains herself to her fellow Paladins (and princess Allura and her advisor Coran) before heading out to find Matt. There is no need to go rogue for this mission; Pidge hopes to trek across space, find her brother, and come back in time for the next Voltron mission. Already, Pidge has a lead: video footage of her brother Matt and a fellow freedom fighter in action against the Galra. So, Pidge travels to a remote world and speaks to the four-armed merchant who sold Matt a particular type of explosive material. Only this trader sells nano-thermite titanium boron, and Pidge demands a lead.
The merchant, however, thinks that a Paladin of Voltron could be sold to the Galra Empire, and attacks. Pidge knocks him out and retrieves the data she needs from him, but what she doesn't realize is that a burly bounty hunter is watching... and following.
Pidge now has the ID of the alien freedom fighter from the video, and she tracks that fighter to an artic planet under siege by the Galra Empire. Pidge lands the Green lion and rushes to help, only for the resistance base to fall, and the target, Te-Osh, is in trouble. After a short space battle, Pidge rescues Te-Osh and her ship, and boards it to meet Te-Osh in person. Fortunately, Te-Osh has a secret transponder that contains the coordinates to Matt's last known location, but Te-Osh dies of her wounds before she can help Pidge any further. But it's a start, and Pidge follows the transponder's code to a massive floating graveyard world. To Pidge's horror, Matt's coordinates lead to his tombstone, but something is off: his date of birth. It's time to use the Holt family code system.
The Power Of Family
Family is an important theme in Voltron: Legendary Defender. Princess Allura had to say goodbye to her father's AI and carry on his legacy, and Lotor has a troubled past with his mixed Galra/Altean heritage. As for the Holts, science and tricks are their trade, and they used codes to pass secret messages that no one else can crack. That's the case here, too: Matt's incorrect date of birth is a code, and once Pidge applies the family secret to it, Matt's real coordinates are revealed. Pidge heads out at once, and the mysterious bounty hunter is right behind her.
Matt is hiding in an underground base on a low-gravity world, and once Pidge slips inside, she is under attack. The two fighters break even, and the defender is revealed to be none other than Matt. Brother and sister unite, and they soon get their first challenge as a united front: that bounty hunter. The lizard-like hunter is willing to capture the Holts dead or alive, and attacks with electric whips. Pidge and Matt fight back as best as they can, and they make creative use of electrical currents and the asteroid's magnetic field to electrocute and knock out the bounty hunter.
Matt is ready to fight alongside Voltron however he can, and he also feels like Pidge has successfully replaced him as a space-faring hero. A few years ago, it was Matt who had heroically gone into space while Katie/Pidge had to stay behind, and Matt gave her his glasses, like passing the torch to her. Pidge became a space hero in her own right and Matt couldn't have been more proud.
