This year, it would be hard to call anime's breakout-star, Tokyo Revengers, anything less than a smash-hit. With an original premise and likable characters, it's no wonder everyone wants to jump in on the hype of this modern story about delinquents.
The Plot of Tokyo Revengers
The story of Tokyo Revengers revolves around the life of Takemichi Hanagaki, a young man in his twenties who, by self-admission, is something of a loser. He's a man seemingly without friends, family, a decent job or anything resembling a love life. One morning, after seeing on the news that his ex-girlfriend from middle school, Hinata Tachibana, was killed in a gang-related event, he himself is pushed into an oncoming train. Instead of dying immediately, he wakes up in the body of his 14-year-old self. Realizing he is in a position to not only save Hina in the past but also fix his life's present, Takamichi is determined to make the most of his current situation.
In the process of fixing the future, Takamichi ends up getting involved with the Tokyo Manji Gang, the very gang responsible for getting Hina killed in the present. However, rather than the group of cold-blooded ruthless gangsters he was expecting, the then-leaders of Toman are anything but. They are also kids, barely older than he is, with morals, family and honor. They might be delinquents, but they're in no way bad people who would purposely hurt others.
This discovery leads Takamichi to completely rethink how he approaches the situation, and he ultimately decides that instead of bringing Toman down, he'll instead join it. Using his knowledge of future events, he realizes he can steer Toman in a better direction, keeping both Hina and the friends he made in the gang such as Mikey and Drakken safe. Of course, all this is much easier said than done, especially when Takamichi is frequently forced to face the forces of those trying to corrupt everything Toman stands for.
Where to Read the Tokyo Revengers Manga
Currently, there aren't any paperback or hardcover volumes of the manga that have been officially translated into English. However, there are multiple methods of reading the official translations digitally. 22 volumes have been released on websites such as Comixology, with volume 23 currently only available on Kindle. While there are no announced plans of publishing physical copies in English, with the increased popularity and higher demand that came after the premiere of the anime, this isn't completely out of the question in the future.
Where to Watch the Tokyo Revengers Anime
As of this writing, Tokyo Revengers can be currently streamed on Crunchyroll and HBO Max. There are multiple dubs available on Crunchyroll, including English. With Crunchyroll being the initial service to offer the show, Tokyo Revengers' first season is complete on that service, while HBO Max is still a few episodes behind. Unfortunately, due to the show's first season only ending recently, there are not yet any official DVD/Blu-ray releases outside of Japan.
Tokyo Revengers was one of the most profitable and successful new anime of the year, with its sales numbers very close behind the likes of Kimetsu no Yaiba: Demon Slayer. Thankfully this means that fans new and old probably won't need to wait too long for a Season 2 announcement and release date.
