The Story of the Hardcore Concert That Birthed the Beastie Boys

Before the Beastie Boys turned certainly one of rap’s most legendary teams, they have been simply three dudes at a Black Flag present that will unknowingly change their lives. At the time, in 1981, Black Flag have been performing their first-ever East Coast present on the Peppermint Lounge in Times Square. In the room to witness it have been Mike D, MCA, and Ad-Rock — who hadn’t but met — and, coincidentally, a number of others who would go on to turn into a few of their era’s most influential musicians. One of them: Henry Rollins, who introduced an electrifying “fuck New York and everybody in it” D.C. perspective to the gang, not like something had Mike D had ever skilled. All of their respective origins, in keeping with the Beastie Boys’ new memoir, will be traced again to that formative evening.

Hear Mike D and Ad-Rock rehash the story of that mythic evening on this unique clip from their memoir’s audiobook, out October 30, which options an all-star voice solid together with Elvis Costello, Jarvis Cocker, Kim Gordon, Nas, Snoop Dogg, Chuck D, and extra.
