The Munsters remake recently debuted the first proper, full-color look at Herman Munster's makeup.
The upcoming film's writer-director Rob Zombie shared the image of star Jeff Daniel Phillips' made-up as Munster on Instagram. It further confirms that Zombie's take on this classic sitcom character will closely resemble the original version, first portrayed by Fred Gwynne. Zombie's post also includes instructions for cosplayers to follow when trying to recreate Herman's distinctive flat-topped head and sickly green complexion.

Zombie gave fans their first glimpse of the rebooted Munster family back in October 2021. The black and white photo was taken on the movie's set in Budapest, Hungary, and features Philips and co-stars Dan Roebuck (Grandpa Munster) and Sheri Moon Zombie (Lily Munster) in full costume. The trio are seated in front of the remake's recently finished recreation of the Munsters' home, Mockingbird Lane Mansion.
Sheri Moon Zombie later uploaded a behind-the-scenes snap that offered a clearer look at her Lily Munster costume. Like Phillips' makeup and clothing, Zombie's wig and dress in the remake appear to be closely modeled on those sported by her predecessor, Yvonne De Carlo, in the 1964 series. The Munsters is the tenth collaboration between the actor and her husband Rob Zombie, with their filmmaking partnership dating back to 2003's House of 1000 Corpses.
More recently, Rob Zombie posted behind-the-scenes Munsters footage filmed inside a cemetery. The brief clip was recorded between takes and showed Jeff Daniel Phillips and Sheri Moon Zombie having their makeup retouched before filming recommenced. It also showcased a sculpture seemingly based on the likeness of Dan Roebuck, which could indicate the scene in question is set near undead vampire Grandpa Munster's grave.
Despite the movie's supernatural cast of characters and spooky settings, reports indicate that the Munsters remake is rated PG. This rating apparently reflects the inclusion of "macabre and suggestive material, scary images and language." While The Munsters' PG classification is in keeping with the family-friendly tone of the original sitcom, it represents a milestone for the film's director. All of Rob Zombie's previous directorial efforts -- House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil's Rejects, Halloween (2007), Halloween II (2009), The Haunted World of El Superbeasto, The Lords of Salem, 31 and 3 from Hell -- were rated R due to their graphic content.
The Munsters does not yet have a release date. It is currently set to screen in theaters and stream on Peacock simultaneously.
