The Winter 2022 season has been an incredible time for anime enthusiasts, featuring hugely anticipated returning titles like the final season of Attack on Titan, Demon Slayer's "Entertainment Arc" and Season 2 of The Case Study of Vanitas alongside breakout titles such as My Dress-Up Darling and Sasaki and Miyano.
As this Winter comes to a close and flowers begin to bloom outdoors once again, anime fans have another season jam-packed full of exciting new releases. Here is a sneak peek of what's to come in the Spring 2022 lineup.
Kaguya-sama: Love Is War (Season 3)
The popular seinen rom-com Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War follows student council president Miyuki Shirogane and his vice president Kaguya Shinomiya, who are locked in a battle of wits to see who will confess their love for each other first. When viewers last left the feuding couple in Season 2, they finished with a tie -- despite each side showing signs of weakness as the season went on.
The addition of supporting characters taking sides and interrupting their clash also made it interesting. Fans of the series are looking forward to see if the fierce battle will conclude this season and who will end up the winner. Season 3 of Kaguya-sama: Love Is War will premiere on April 9th.
Komi Can't Communicate (Season 2)
A breakout anime for Fall 2021, viewers were immediately smitten with the romantic slice-of-life anime Komi Can't Communicate, about a girl named Komi who desperately wants to make friends despite having extreme social anxiety. It is easy to fall in love with her journey as she overcomes something that many people experience to some degree.
Fans are also eager to see the development of her relationship with Tadano, the first person to ever befriend her, as he helps her make more friends. Will Komi finally reach her goal of making 100 friends? Will she overcome her anxiety and be able to speak? Season 2 of Komi Can't Communicate will premiere on April 7th.
Yu-Gi-Oh! Go Rush!!
A brand new Yu-Gi-Oh! series has been announced for Spring 2022, and longtime fans of the show are looking forward to it because of one unique factor. The protagonist, Yudias, is an alien from the planet Belgar. After being forced out of his home planet, he lands on earth and encounters siblings Yuama and Yūhi -- who are a part of a group of alien hunters.
This is the first time in the almost three-decade history of the franchise that the protagonist is not human. How might this change the well-known and beloved format of the series? Yu-Gi-Oh! Go Rush!! will premiere on April 3rd.
The Rising of the Shield Hero (Season 2)
It's been three years since the first season aired so fans are more than eager for a continuation to this beloved isekai. The Rising of the Shield Hero is a underdog-turned-victor story of an otaku named Naofumi Iwatani, who is transported to another world and is eventually abandoned with only a shield to protect him.
After meeting the tanuki girl Raphtalia and the bird-creature Filo, Naofumi's fate takes a drastic change as the three protagonists train and protect each other. Season 2 of The Rising of the Shield Hero will premiere on April 6th.
Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 (Season 2)
Despite premiering its first season to mostly negative reviews, this fully CG animated Netflix-exclusive adaptation of Ghost In the Shell: SAC_2045 will be continuing with a Season 2. While most of the critiques are about the CG not achieving as much expression as the original 2002 anime series, Season 1 left the looming threat of a post-human uprising against the Sustainable War. Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 will premiere in May 2022.
Spy x Family
The beloved Spy x Family manga by Tatsuya Endou will be getting an adaptation in Spring 2022, much to the anticipation of its already widespread fanbase. This action/comedy story focuses on secret agent "Twilight" and his latest mission: investigating an Ostanian politician by infiltrating his son's school.
Without a family of his own, he finds a fake family but is unaware that his pretend-wife is a lethal assassin, while his pretend-daughter can read minds. Although they each have their own reasons for staying here, their relationship and bonding soon sees them forming a real family of their own. Spy x Family will premiere on April 9th.
Shikimori's Not Just A Cutie
A new and wholesome slice-of-life rom-com is arriving in Spring 2022 -- but this time, the relationship is already established. Instead of the typical friends-to-lovers trope with the occasional outside threat, Shikamori's Not Just a Cutie explores the dynamic of a wholesome couple who are undeniably in love. Izumi, who is notoriously clumsy and unlucky, brings a cool and scary side out of his girlfriend, Shikimori, under the right circumstances.
His seemingly-perfect girlfriend turns into a cool, demanding and outright terrifying presence -- a side that she only brings out for him and a side he l0ves just as much, if not more. Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie will premiere on April 10th.
