WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Episode 7 of The Genius Prince’s Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt, "Yesterday's Enemy Is Today's...," now streaming on Funimation.
Prince Wein's life has been on a downward spiral ever since his accidental defeat of Marden and nearly going to war with Antagal following the death of Gerard, the son of the tyrannical Marquess Grenache. Both his accidental victories and diabolical scheming have gotten the attention of other monarchs in the neighboring kingdoms, including his childhood friend Lowa, who turned out to be the imperial princess Lowellmina of Earthworld. Just when Wein thought he was finally getting a break from getting into conflicts with other kingdoms, he finds himself in another conflict with the kingdom of Cavarin, this time as the center of a conspiracy by the Holy Elite.
As Episode 6 revealed, King Ordalasse of Cavarin invited Wein to his kingdom's Spirit Festival as a cover for his real plan of inviting him to become a member of the Holy Elite. As part of his invite, Wein meets privately with Caldmellia, who has plans of her own for him and is revealed in Episode 7 to be the mastermind behind the Holy Elite's conspiracy. Between King Ordalasse's questionable invite to Cavarin, Caldmelia's questionable interview of Wein and Cavarin's General Levert planning to assassinate him, it doesn't take Wein long to catch on to what's really going on.
During the rest of his stay in Cavarin, Wein informs Ninym and his own general about the conspiracy being built around him. While Wein remains oblivious of Caldmellia's conspiracy, he does figure out what King Ordalasse is really after by having him join the Holy Elite. Beginning with the fact Ordalasse has been pushing down hard on his own lineage, he's been losing favor with his people for quite some time. In an attempt to maintain his power, Ordalasse took advantage of Marden's war with Natra to invade Marden and depose its king with help from his advisor, Holonyeh. As part of his plan to maintain his power, Oradalasse invited Wein to the Holy Elite so he could be indebted to him.
Unbeknownst to Ordalasse, Holonyeh has plans to double-cross him as well. The only people fully aware of this fact are Zeno of Marden and Ninym, who caught him conspiring with General Levert to assassinate both him and Wein. In Zeno's case, she knows from experience that Holonyeh can't be trusted, as his betrayal of Marden's king -- who fully trusted him -- facilitated the kingdom's downfall. She requests to join Wein in his meeting with Ordalasse, which Wein objects to at first. He only agrees to let her join in on their meeting on the condition that she won't assassinate the king.
In his meeting with Wein, Ordalasse begins to reveal his true colors, including his racist mindset toward Flahm people, who are bred as a slave race in Natra. When Ordalasse requests a few Flahm people for him to hunt down and kill for sport, this upsets Wein since his best friend and love interest, Ninym, is a member of the Flahm race. At that moment, Wein calculates his risks and asks Ordalasse how soon he should make his decision: now or the following day. When Ordalasse asks for his response now, Wein proceeds to kill Ordalasse with the sword of his general, shocking both Zeno and Holonyeh.
Since Wein made the impulsive decision to murder a monarch over his racist views of Flahm people, he then permits Zeno to get her revenge on Holonyeh for the fall of Marden. She does not hesitate to bury her sword in Holonyeh's body, although the latter manages to recognize her face just before he dies. Since Natra will now inevitably be going to war with Cavarin following Wein's assassination of its king, Zeno finally reveals her true identity as Princess Zenovia, the last surviving monarch of Marden. Since her father, the king, had sent her away prior to Cavarin's invasion, that was the only reason she had escaped assassination.
Since Zenovia doesn't have experience ruling a kingdom, she proposes an alliance between Marden and Natra in which Marden functions as a vassal of Natra. Wein doesn't like the proposal, as he does not want more responsibility than he already has, but has no choice but to accept. While Wein is lamenting having to take responsibility for two kingdoms, he's completely unaware of the bigger threat that still lurks behind the scenes: Caldmellia's conspiracy to dethrone him. Unbeknownst to Wein, killing Ordalasse helped progress Caldmellia's plans, as she too was planning to assassinate the king. Since Wein also lured General Levert into a trap that resulted in his death, this likewise helped Caldmellia since he unwittingly removed one final loose thread for her.
