How did the mix come together?
I knew I wanted it to feel like an open-armed, inclusive celebration. A precursor to everyone being back together.
I like surprises and twists in a DJ mix, so it's more about how each track makes you feel at the time rather than any specific genres, I managed to squeeze through a wide range of what’s exciting me and show a bit of my breadth as an artist.
Was there a thread or theme that binds the tracks and the artists you chose?
I wanted a diverse range of artists on there, with LGBTQ+, female and POC artists represented. Just like club nights, the best parties happen when there’s a mix of everyone.
A good chunk of the artists are friends, so there’s unreleased music from KETTAMA, Maya Jane Coles (under her new alias CAYAM) and Fear-E, as well as new music from my forthcoming mixtape, 'Wonderland'.
What did you record the mix on?
CDJ2000s and Pioneer DJM900. I created arrangements edits for most of the individual tracks in Ableton first to maximise the flow. Also added a sneaky key change part way through one track so every mix hits the right energy shift and key for that time, especially useful when flowing through different genres.
What is it that you find so exciting about the art of DJ culture?
Being able to bring people together and create lasting, collective moments, regardless of where anyone comes from, is a really powerful thing.
