Netflix has released a new trailer for Super Crooks, its upcoming anime adaptation of Mark Millar and Leinil Yu's 2012 Marvel miniseries.
The new trailer provides a more in-depth look at some of the series characters, including its central protagonist Johnny Bolt, a super-powered petty criminal who can control electricity, and The Heat, Johnny's mentor who draws him back into a life of crime in order to help him pay off his substantial mob debts. The trailer also gives a first look at the anime's portrayal of The Praetorian, a corrupt superhero who possesses dozens of powers. The new series will be 13 episodes long, with only the last three of those episodes being a direct adaptation of the original comic book -- the preceding 10 episodes will be an all new prequel story written by Millar.
"This is the Japanese anime adaptation of the super villain book I did with my friend Leinil Yu a while back, 13 episodes of sheer and utter madness," Millar said in his email newsletter. "The book itself was only four issues long, but I plotted out lots of new stories around it because we wanted to make this as big and bold as it could possibly be and Leinil came back to design all the brilliant new characters." Millar also praised the Japanese staff who worked on Super Crooks' anime adaptation, saying "The entire series drops on Netflix on Nov 25th and if you're familiar with Studio Bones you'll know you're in for a treat. A special shout out to director Motonobu Hori who has given us superhero visuals unlike anything I've ever seen from an American studio. You're going to love this."
Prior to Super Crooks, Director Motonobu Hori was one of the directors on the Netflix original anime series Carole & Tuesday, a role which he shared alongside Cowboy Bebop creator Shinichiro Watanabe. Hori has had a long career in the anime industry: he was as an animator of Studio Ghibli's Academy Award-winning Spirited Away, and also worked in a variety of roles on acclaimed anime series such as Paradise Kiss, Psycho-Pass, and Satoshi Kon's Paranoia Agent.
Netflix also announced new casting details for the series. In addition to Attack on Titan's Kenjiro Tsuda and Evangelion's Maaya Sakamoto, the show's Japanese voice cast will include the talents of Hiroshi Yanaka (Kaiji), Yasuji Kimura (Gokusen), Pierre Taki (Attack on Titan live-action), Junichi Sawabe (Black Clover), Hisao Egawa (Haikyu!!), Eiji Takamoto (Mobile Suit Gundam AGE), Subaru Kimura (March Comes in Like a Lion), Tetsu Inada (My Hero Academia), Wataru Hatano (Bungo Stray Dogs), and KENN (Macross Delta).
Super Crooks will premiere exclusively on Netflix on Nov. 25.
