A new series from anime studio Madhouse and the director of One-Punch Man is on its way.
Madhouse, the studio behind massively successful anime One-Punch Man and Hunter x Hunter, is reuniting with One-Punch Man director Shingo Natsume for the all new anime series Sonny Boy. Natsume, who has gone on to direct a variety of different anime from ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept. and Space Dandy, will write and direct Sonny Boy, an original anime of his own creation. Natsume will be joined by animator Kugai Norifumi and manga artist Hisashi Eguchi, who has previously worked on character designs for the critically-acclaimed anime film Perfect Blue. Norifumi and Eguchi will co-design Sonny Boy's original characters.
Other talent involved in the project include Mari Fujino (Dororo) as art director, Akane Fushihara (Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card, One-Punch Man) as director of photography and Shouji Hata (Vinland Saga, Great Pretender, Fairy Tail) as sound director. Kashiko Kimura (Black Lagoon, Stars Align, No Game No Life) will work on Sonny Boy's editing, and Satoshi Hashimoto (Beastars, Death Note, Attack on Titan) will do the anime's color design. Vocalist and guitarist of rock band Ging Nang BOYZ Kazunobu Mineta is writing the anime's theme "Shōnen Shōjo," which can be heard in the teaser.
Much of the staff involved in Sonny Boy has previously worked on the hit series One-Punch Man. Originally a web-comic by anonymous manga artist ONE, One-Punch Man was adapted into a manga in 2012 and was later adapted into an incredibly popular and critically beloved anime series by studio Madhouse in 2015. In 2019, the anime changed hands, and the less prestigious studio J. C. Staff (Toradora, Food Wars, The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.) produced the critically mixed second season. Even so, the One-Punch Man anime continues to enjoy immense popularity, with protagonist Saitama recently making a cameo in Amazon Prime's animated superhero series Invincible.
The original anime Sonny Boy is a science-fiction survival anime which follows middle school third year Nagara, transfer student Nozomi and their classmate Mizuho. During their summer vacation, these three children, along with 33 other students, are suddenly transported from their homes to another dimension. In this dimension, new superpowers awaken in each of the children, and the former middle school students must learn to survive and control these overwhelming powers. While there is no official release date as of yet, Sonny Boy is scheduled to premiere sometime in 2021.
