One creative Studio Ghibli fan has created a custom computer mouse that is modeled after the Ohmu from Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.
A video of the 'Ohmouse' was posted on Reddit, showcasing its cute design, glowing eyes and functionality. According to the creator, "The mouse is made from 2 Logitech mice, skinned with foam, and essentially the buttons from one mouse piggy-backing on the other to get a better ohmu shape. I wanted to make it using parts I had available so it's skinned with 3mm foam shingles, the eyes are made from hot melt glue, and the feelers are cut from wooden skewers."
While the film adaptation of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind premiered in 1984, a year before Studio Ghibli was officially founded, it is often considered a part of the studio's film canon because it, and the original manga series, were created by the studio's co-founder Hayao Miyazaki. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is set after a cataclysmic global war that wiped industrial civilization off the map. While humanity managed to survive, the Earth remains heavily polluted and is now dominated by a toxic forest that is inhabited by the Ohmu, massive, mutated insects.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind has inspired more than just impressive fan-made content; it also spawned three video game adaptations by Technopolis Soft -- Nausicaä's Close Call, Nausicaä Adventure and Never Forget to Nausicaä Game Forever. It's noteworthy that these games are the only video game adaptations of Miyazaki's films other than two tie-in games for his movie Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro.
Moreover, there have been new developments in the world of Studio Ghibli beyond just impressive fan content like the "Ohmouse." A new Studio Ghibli movie directed by Miyazaki is on the way; How Do You Live? will adapt the 1937 novel of the same name by Yoshino Genzaburō. The director's classic graphic novel, Shuna's Journey, which tells the story of a prince trying to save his people from starvation, is finally receiving an English release as well.
The impact of Studio Ghibli's films can hardly be overstated. Recently, Eloise Von Velvet set a Guinness World Record by collecting an enormous amount of memorabilia for films like My Neighbor Totoro, Howling's Movie Castle, Spirited Away, Ponyo, Kiki's Delivery Service, Grave of Fireflies and Princess Mononoke. According to Guinness, her Studio Ghibli collection is the largest in the world with 1,304 individual pieces.
Many beloved Studio Ghibli films, including Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, can be found on HBO Max.
