PlayStation's State of Play unveiled the first full trailer of Capcom's latest entry in its iconic battler game, Street Fighter 6.
Along with a massive showcase of surprising reveals, such as the Resident Evil 4 remake's first trailer and a new trailer for the upcoming Final Fantasy XVI, PlayStation premiered the first full look at Street Fighter 6. Along with the return of classic characters from the franchise, such as Chun-Li and Ryu, the game also introduced players to fresh faces such as Jamie, who appears to employ a type of drunken boxing style. Players also get a brief look at the game's new open-world exploration, which lets them walk the streets searching for battles. Perhaps the biggest news of all is that the new game will release in 2023.
"Street Fighter 6, the next game in the iconic series, will release in 2023," announced the trailer description. "Take part in the Fighting Ground, which focuses on the classic fighting game experience with modes from previous games in the series. Two new modes will be available alongside: World Tour, an immersive single-player story experience, and Battle Hub, which will further expand the scope of player communication and engagement. Your Moment. Your Fight."
Street Fighter 6 includes two play modes. One lets players engage in one-on-one battles with other characters, a typical mainstay of the franchise and similar battlers. The other is a brand new feature in the franchise: the aforementioned open world, which lets players explore the city in search of new fights to engage in. Another new feature is the inclusion of in-game commentary from popular figures in the fighting game community.
The latest entry in the Street Fighter series was announced in February 2022 with a teaser trailer that hinted at the game's improved style and graphics. It came after a countdown on the Street Fighter website concluded after days of teasing some form of announcement. Although it showed no gameplay, the trailer's detailed character models excited fans who hoped it meant improvements in design for the new release. The trailer arrives in the year of Street Fighter's 35th anniversary, which was also marked by the release of Capcom Fighting Collection. One of the most beloved long-term game franchises of all time, Street Fighter even inspired a live-action film that has become a cult classic.
Street Fighter 6 will launch sometime in 2023 on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
