Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu leads the English voice cast in the first trailer for Bright: Samurai Soul, an anime spinoff of Bright.
Joining Liu on the English dub side of Bright: Samurai Soul is Fred Mancuso and Yuzu Harada. The Japan dub cast stars Yuki Nomura, Daisuke Hirakawa and Shion Wakayama. Liu voices Izou, a one-eyed wandering samurai and the protagonist of the Bright anime. Opposite Izou is the orc Raiden, voiced by Mancuso. Raiden is attempting to redeem himself from a life of thievery.
Samurai Soul is based in the same world as the live-action film. It takes place in Japan during the end of the Shogunate and the beginning of the Meiji period. Directed by Kyohei Ishiguro, the anime blends Japanese culture with the world of Bright, and utilizes an animation style that fuses characteristics of Japanese woodblock print art with 3DCG technology.
The trailer begins with a powerful bright light emitting from a wand, which is teased to end the Shogunate period as Japan shifts toward a new era. This is when Liu's Izou and Mancuso's Raiden enter the scene. While Izou's lost his reason to live, Raiden detests murder and hopes to leave behind his life stealing. They both happen to meet a young elf girl named Sonya, and together they go on a journey along the Tokaido road to bring Sonya and the bright wand to the elves in the north. However, standing in their way is a mysterious organization called Inferni, which aims to take the wand to revive the Dark Lord.
Netflix recently announced another Marvel Cinematic Universe actor will join the voice cast of a Netflix anime. Hayley Atwell, who voices Captain Carter in What If...?, voices Lara Croft in an anime adaptation of Tomb Raider.
Bright: Samurai Soul debuts Oct. 12 on Netflix.
