Netflix has released a new video showing how several scenes from Sailor Moon goes from storyboards to rough animatics to completed animation.
The new clip was released to the official Netflix Anime account on YouTube. The behind-the-scenes look features several scenes from Part 1 of Sailor Moon Eternal, including the introduction of the Amazoness Quartet and Usagi and Chibiusa's encounter with a tiger. The clips feature each scene seamlessly transforming from black and white sketches to fully colored and animated footage.
Both parts of Sailor Moon Eternal were released on Netflix earlier this year. The movies begin shortly after where the third season of Sailor Moon Crystal left off, with Usagi, Mamoru and Chibiusa seeking out a pegasus named Helios, who appeared to Chibiusa in a vision. Soon after, the villainous Dead Moon Circus soon arrive on Earth, and begin causing problems for Usagi and the rest of the Sailor Soldiers.
Sailor Moon Eternal was first announced in 2017 on the official Sailor Moon 25th anniversary website. Both parts of the movie were directed by Chiaki Kon, who previously directed the third season of Sailor Moon Crystal, and has also worked on a variety of other anime series adapted from shojo and josei manga, including Nodame Cantabile and Chihayafuru. The movie also features the return of character designer Kazuki Tadano, who worked on the original 1990s Sailor Moon anime adaptation. Series creator Naoko Takeuchi supervised the movies' production, which was handled by Studio Deen and Toei Animation.

Sailor Moon was first published in Japan in 1991, and was one of the first shojo anime series to be localized and broadcast in the United States and Canada. After developing a small but dedicated cult following in syndication, Sailor Moon gained mainstream attention when it, alongside other iconic 90s anime series such as Dragon Ball Z and Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, were featured on Cartoon Network's Toonami block. The series is often cited as one of the most influential shojo and magical girl series of all time. English pop star Dua Lipa recently paid homage to the series in her latest music video, "Levitating," which was made with a team of Japanese animators and recreates the look of the original 1990s Sailor Moon anime.
The original 1992 anime series can be streamed on Hulu. The anime series was rebooted in 2014 with Sailor Moon Crystal, which is a more faithful adaptation of Takeuchi's original manga. Crystal is available for streaming on Netflix and Crunchyroll. The Sailor Moon Eternal movies are available for streaming exclusively through Netflix.
