Sailor Moon Eternal: The Amazon Trio Are Real Scene-Stealers

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Sailor Moon Eternal: The Movie, now available on Netflix.

Sailor Moon Eternal adapts the Dream arc of the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon manga by Naoko Takeuchi. It introduces new challenges for the Sailor Guardians to overcome, as well as a colorful new set of villains. Led by the dark Queen Nehelenia and her servant Zirconia, the Amazoness Quartet carry out their evil bidding in their own child-like way. One of the Quartet's best plans for getting the Sailor Guardians out of the way is the creation of the Amazon Trio.

Originally existing as a fish, a hawk and a tiger, the Amazon Trio are unapologetically queer, stylish, energetic and harbor dreams of their own. Respectively, they are Fish Eye, Hawk's Eye and Tiger's Eye. Though their time on screen was short-lived, what the Amazon Trio brought to Sailor Moon Eternal was memorable enough to steal every scene they appeared in.

Fish Eye

The first of the Amazon Trio to appear is Fish Eye, who targets Sailor Mercury. As a manipulator of water himself, Fish Eye uses a mirror to trap Mercury in a nightmare constructed from an unhealed trauma in her past. Though Fish Eye is not particularly malicious, he nonetheless wants to succeed in exchange for a reward. When he ultimately fails, he does express anger just before Sailors Moon and Chibi Moon defeat him with the Moon Gorgeous Meditation attack.

Tiger's Eye

Tiger's Eye is the second of Sailor Moon Eternal's Amazon Trio to carry out his plan, though he targets Sailor Mars. In contrast with Fish Eye's trauma attack on Mercury, Tiger's Eye tried a different tactic on Mars: gaslighting. Knowing she harbors strong feelings of anger and resentment toward her father for abandoning her, Tiger's Eye tries to convince her that it's not independence she desires, but the love of a man.

He does this by presenting Sailor Mars with images of her younger self pursuing and marrying a man -- in this case, himself. When he fails to trick her mind, he attempts to trick her judgment by making her doubt she can spot the real Tiger's Eye in the hall of mirrors. He is ultimately unsuccessful and Mars defeats him with her Flame Sniper attack.

Hawk's Eye

The last of the Amazon Trio to appear is Hawk's Eye. He is the group's most sympathetic member, having no interest in impressing Queen Nehelenia or the Amazoness Quartet. Instead, he uses his brief time on Earth to fulfill his dream of owning a shop. Since he specializes in herbs, he opens an herbal specialty store that he plans to expand into a global business. This is a dream he shares with Sailor Jupiter, with whom he briefly bonds.

When he learns her identity, Hawk's Eye doesn't try to kill or trap Jupiter with underhanded tactics. Instead, he tries to appeal to her dreams by encouraging her to pursue them and to give up her life as a Sailor Guardian. He even invites her to join the Dead Moon Circus, thinking she would make a great partner in fulfilling a shared dream. He is ultimately unsuccessful and is defeated by Jupiter's Oak Evolution attack. Before he draws his last breath in Sailor Moon Eternal, however, he still encourages Jupiter to pursue her dreams, even if he only got to briefly live his out.
