A new rumor suggests Warner Bros. may find a way to use Henry Cavill as Superman in Ta-Nehisi Coates and J.J. Abrams' upcoming Superman film.
Coates' upcoming script is said to allow room for Cavill's Superman to appear if that's the route the creatives behind the project decide to take.
Coates was hired in February 2021 to write a new Superman movie, with Abrams producing under his Bad Robot production company. It was later reported that Coates' script would focus on a Black version of the Man of Steel. Many fans believed the film would use Val-Zod, the Superman of Earth-2, but in May 2021 it was revealed Coates was "crafting a Kal-El in the vein of the original Superman comics" and that the film "will have the protagonist hail from Krypton and come to Earth."
Reports indicated the film will also be set sometime in the 20th century, but, with Cavill's rumored involvement, it's unclear if it will still be a period piece. An industry insider recently stated that Coates would be turning in a new draft of his screenplay to Warner Bros. soon.
This rumor follows the recent report that Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav believes "several top-shelf characters such as Superman have been left to languish and need to be revitalized." Cavill's version of the Man of Steel has not appeared in a new film since the 2017 theatrical and 2021 Snyder cuts of Justice League. The character has not headlined a solo film since 2013's Man of Steel. He shared top billing with the Dark Knight in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Most DC fans are keen on seeing Cavill return to the role, and the actor has remained open to reprising Kal-El. During his promotional tour for The Witcher Season 2, Cavill revealed he was "ready and waiting for the phone calls" from DC.
The Superman brand will have a presence in The Flash movie. Michael Shannon and Antje Traue are set to reprise their Man of Steel roles as General Zod and Faora-Ul in the upcoming DC Extended Universe installment. Sasha Calle is also playing Supergirl, the cousin of Superman, in The Flash.
The Flash hits theaters on June 23, 2023. Warner Bros. has not set a release date for Coates' Superman film.
