The story for Season 2 was previously previewed with a trailer, which introduced a new character who will be joining Naofumi's traveling party, Ost Horai. The new season will see the titular Shield Hero, as well as faithful companions Raphtalia and Filo, attempting to stop the rampage of a massive legendary beast, the Spirt Tortoise. The cast of the first season will all reprise their roles for the anime's continuation and they will be joined by voice actor Kana Hanazawa, who will voice the new addition to Naofumi's team. While the first season of the anime was produced by Made in Abyss studio Kinema Citrus, production for the second season has been moved over to South Korean animation house DR Movie. The second season will be helmed by director Masato Jinbo, who previously worked on both seasons of another popular fantasy series, Restaurant to Another World.
The isekai series tells the story of Naofumi Iwatani, an easy-going university student who suddenly finds himself transported to a fantasy world. Shortly after arriving, Naofumi is heralded as one of this world's four Cardinal Heroes, and is subsequently entrusted with a magical shield. While the other three heroes receive significant financial backing and powerful allies, Naofumi is betrayed by the princess of the kingdom and is shunned by the nobility. Now cynical and bitter, Naofumi sets out with a new pair of companions to rebuild his reputation and save the world from a mysterious threat.
The Rising of the Shield Hero was created by author Aneko Yusagi. Originally published as a web novel in 2012, the series has since been adapted into both an anime and a manga series. While the series did receive some criticism at the start, all of the different adaptations of the series have since received widespread praise for its lovable cast of characters and changes to the traditional isekai formula. The original season of the anime was so successful that a second and third season were immediately greenlit, a rarity for anime productions.
The complete first season of the anime is now available for streaming on Crunchyroll, while the manga and novel series are both available in English from One Peace Books.
