Kadokawa has released a new trailer for Season 2 of the dark fantasy series The Rising of the Shield Hero.
Focusing on fan-favorite character Raphtalia, the trailer provides an overview of her story arc so far in the anime. It showcases her growing skills as a warrior and her evolving relationship with the show's protagonist, Naofumi. This trailer ends on a hopeful note, unlike the second season's previous trailer, which teased the many difficult and brutal challenges that await Naofumi, Raphtalia and their companions as they travel the world.
The anime is based on a light novel series of the same name by Aneko Yusagi, which was first published in 2012 as a web novel on the user-generated publishing site Shōsetsuka ni Narō and was later acquired and re-published by Media Factory. As of June 25, 2019, the series has produced 22 volumes worth of content with over three million copies currently in circulation. The first season of The Rising of the Shield Hero's anime adaptation premiered on Jan. 9, 2019. While it initially provoked controversy in North America for its framing of a false rape accusation and depiction of slavery, it ultimately went on to receive positive reviews from critics and gain a passionate fan following. Raphtalia won the Best Girl category at the 2020 Crunchyroll Anime Awards.
Once again Kinema Citrus (Made in Abyss, Scorching Ping Pong Girls) is producing The Rising of the Sheild Hero with Takao Abo (Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage, Eureka Seven) returning as director. Keigo Koyanagi (Sirius the Jaeger, Killing Bites) is overseeing series composition, Masahiro Suwa (Bungou Stray Dogs, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood) is designing the characters and Kevin Penkin (Star Wars: Visions, Made in Abyss) is composing the music.
It has been confirmed that several members of the voice cast from Season 1 will return for Season 2 of the show, including Kaito Ishikawa (Tokyo 24th Ward, Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle) as Naofumi and Asami Seto (My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!, Jujutsu Kaisen) as Raphtalia.
Season 2 of The Rising of the Shield Hero is scheduled to premiere as part of the spring 2022 anime season. Other titles that are expected to make their debut in 2022 include Spy x Family, Luminous Witches, The Genuis Prince's Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt, Love After World Domination, Girls' Frontline and new seasons of The Case Study of Vanitas, Ascendance of a Bookworm and Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out!
