Rebuild of Evangelion: Amazon Prime Credits Confirm New Dub Cast

The release of the first three Rebuild of Evangelion films on Amazon Prime Japan confirms that the movies have received brand new English dubs, bringing back the lead actors from the ADV Films' original dub of the Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series.

The new English cast lists for Evangelion 1.11: You Are (Not) AloneEvangelion 2.22: You Can (Not) Advance and Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo have been shared on the Twitter account "EvaMonkey," a major Evangelion fan site and YouTube channel. Responses from other users with access to Amazon Prime Japan have confirmed the veracity of the screenshots.

The four lead actors from the original Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series dub are reprising their roles: Spike Spencer as Shinji Ikari, Amanda Winn Lee as Rei Ayanami, Tiffany Grant as Asuka Langley-Shikinami (named Asuka Langley-Soyru in the original series) and Allison Keith-Shipp as Misato Katsuragi. Spencer, Grant and Keith-Shipp were all in the previous dub of the Rebuild movies from Funimation, but this is Winn Lee's big return to the role of Rei after being replaced with Brina Palencia in the Funimation dubs. John Swasey, who took over the role of Gendo Ikari from Tristan MacAvery for the dub of the Neon Genesis Evangelion Director's Cut release and continued playing Gendo in the Funimation Rebuild dubs, is also returning.

New cast members for this dub include Mary Faber as Ritsuko Akagi, Deneen Melody as Mari Illustrious-Makinami, Sean Burgos as Ryoji Kaji and Daman Mills as Kaworu Nagisa. Mills is now the sixth actor to play Kaworu in English, following Kyle Sturdivant in the first ADV release, Aaron Krohn in Manga Entertainment's dub of the original movies, Greg Ayres in the Director's Cut, Jerry Jewell in FUNimation's Rebuild dubs and Clifford Chapin on Netflix.

This new dub, produced at Dubbing Brothers USA and directed by Joe Fria, shares no lead actors in common with Netflix's 2019 redub of the original Neon Genesis Evangelion series and the Death and Rebirth and End of Evangelion movies. The Netflix dub, starring Casey Mongillo as Shinji, Ryan Bartley as Rei, Stephanie McKeon as Asuka and Carrie Keranen as Misato, received praise for its performances but attracted controversy both for not including the original ADV dub actors and for some controversial translation choices. Khara's in-house English translator Dan Kanemitsu wrote the scripts for both the Netflix dub and the new Amazon Prime dub, so while the former source of controversy has been remedied, the latter might still be an issue.

All four Rebuild of Evangelion movies, including the final film Evangelion 3.0+1.01: Thrice Upon A Time, will be available to stream worldwide on Amazon Prime Video on August 13. GKIDS will be releasing the original Neon Genesis Evangelion series and movies on Blu-ray later this year, though it's unconfirmed which of the show's many dub casts will be included.
